Church Services This Week at Sullivan Hollow Second Ward Weber Heights Stake Ogden Utah September 9-25-2011

Elders Quorum
The lesson was taken from Elder Jeffrey R Halland’s general conference talk from April 2011, An Ensign to the Nations

A prophet is a teacher.  When we speak of false prophets, we are generally talking about false teachers.

“[A prophet] He was to be, above all, a preacher of righteousness. When the people had fallen away from a true faith in Jehovah, the prophets had to try to restore that faith and remove false views about the character of God and the nature of the Divine requirement. In certain cases prophets predicted future events, e.g., there are the very important prophecies announcing the coming of Messiah’s kingdom; but as a rule a prophet was a forthteller rather than a foreteller. In a general sense a prophet is anyone who has a testimony of Jesus Christ by the Holy Ghost, as in Num. 11:25–29; Rev. 19:10.” (Bible Dictionary, “Prophet”)

“A seer is a revelator and a prophet also’ (Mosiah 8:15–16), and when necessary he can use the Urim and Thummim or holy interpreters (Mosiah 8:13; 28:16). There have been many seers in the history of God’s people on this earth, but not so many as there have been prophets. ‘A seer is greater than a prophet … and a gift which is greater can no man have …’ (Mosiah 8:15–18).” (Bible Dictionary, “Seer”)

A revelator is one who receives revelation.  “The English word revelation is translated from a Greek word apocalypse, meaning to make known or uncover.”  Everyone who has received the gift of the Holy Ghost may receive revelation within the bounds of their stewardship.

“A dispensation of the gospel is a period of time in which the Lord has at least one authorized servant on the earth who bears the holy priesthood and the keys, and who has a divine commission to dispense the gospel to the inhabitants of the earth. When this occurs, the gospel is revealed anew, so that people of that dispensation do not have to depend basically on past dispensations for knowledge of the plan of salvation.” (Bible Dictionary, Dispensation)

The six dispensation of the earth.  Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus Christ and the Apostles, Joseph Smith and other latter-day prophets.

Adam was not a failure.  He understood God's plan. Why would Father allow his plan to be frustrated?  Jesus and the atonement was not the backup plan. Jesus was chosen to be our savior before the earth was created.

Joseph smith searched out which church he should join with the resources he had and then asked Heavenly Father.

Somewhere I read a statement that the function of a newspaper is to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comforted. In some respects, I think, this is what the Church is all about—to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comforted.” (Harold B Lee, New Era January 1971, The Message My Dear Young Fellow Workers)

President Monson is not the prophet of just the church, but of the entire earth.

2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:89
89 For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand.

We should constantly be asking ourselves between conferences if we remember what was said by the prophets in the previous conferences. If we get to the point we can't remember then we should go back and review them.

Develop specific questions you want answered, ask father for the answer and pay attention for that answer in general conference. Even in he music.

Sunday School
3 questions to ask when studying the epistles
Who, where, and when? (one question)

What problems, issues, and questions do they cover?

How does it apply to me?

Why is Romans the first epistle in the New Testament?  Because it is the longest epistle?

Paul writes to the Romans, but he had never been there.  Who established the church in Rome?  There were 11 other apostles doing
the same thing as Paul.  We just don't have their records.

Romans 1:11
 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

In addition to the spiritual gift to help them be more fully establish, it is possible that Paul wanted to use Rome as a jumping off place to get to Spain or other parts of Europe to expand the reach of the church to more people.

How many languages must Paul have spoken?

Ephesians 4: 13-14

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Romans 8:16-17
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

From the Bulletin
The scriptures are the touchstone for measuring correctness and truth, and they are clear that real happiness lies not in denying the justice of God or trying to circumvent the consequences of the sin but in repentance and forgiveness  through the atoning grace of the Son of God (see Alma 42). Scripture tutors us in principles and moral values essential to maintaining civil society, including integrity, responsibility, selflessness, fidelity, and charity. In scripture, we find vivid portrayals of the blessings that come from honoring true principles, as well as the tragedies that befall when individuals and civilizations discard them. Where scriptural truths are ignored or abandoned, the essential moral core of society disintegrates and decay is close behind. In time, nothing is left to sustain the institutions that sustain society. In the end, the central purpose of all scripture is to fill our souls with faith in God the Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ — faith that They exist; faith in the Father's plan for our immortality and eternal life; faith in the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which animates this plan of happiness; faith to make the gospel of Jesus Christ our way of life; and faith to come to know "the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom [He has] sent" (John 17:3).

Gathering of Israel
Abraham’s son Isaac
Isaac’s son Jacob (Israel)
Israel to his 12 sons (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulon, Joseph, and Benjamin)

The house or tribes of Israel scattered into the northern kingdoms and southern kingdom (Judah and Benjamin).

Eventually, anciently the twelve tribes of Israel were scattered all over the earth, including to America.

John 10:14-16
14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Doctrine and Covenants 110:11
11 After this vision closed, the heavens were again opened unto us; and Moses appeared before us, and committed unto us the keys of the gathering of Israel from the four parts of the earth, and the leading of the ten tribes from the land of the north.

Spiritual gathering is missionary work.  Physical gathering is people physically moving.

Sometimes the gathering has been to one place and sometimes it has been where we currently live.  This allows the people to draw strength from each other.

Sunday School
Paul stays at Corinth a year and a half.

Godly Sorrow vs Guilt
Both can cause similar pain, Godly sorrow has a feeling of love with it.  Perhaps love for those you have wronged.  Perhaps love which compels you to be better,

1 Corinthians 3:3
3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

Tables of stone are difficult to carry around.  Even our scriptures today are difficult to have physically with us always.  If we have them memorized and/or incorporated into our character then they are of more value to and more often with us.

The Old Testament is about the old covenant, which is why there is not a lot of record there about times when the people had the full gospel.

The Corinthians were so busy reading the old covenant that they were having trouble comprehending the new covenant and new things God had to share with them.

Are we so caught up in what God said to people long ago that we miss what he is saying to us?

Joseph Smith Translation of Galatians 3:19-20
19 Wherefore then, the law was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made in the law given to Moses, who was ordained by the hand of angels to be a mediator of this first covenant, (the law.)
20 Now this mediator was not a mediator of the new covenant; but there is one mediator of the new covenant, who is Christ, as it is written in the law concerning the promises made to Abraham and his seed. Now Christ is the mediator of life; for this is the promise which God made unto Abraham.

Moses was the mediator of the old covenant.  We do not gain salvation through Moses.

Missionary that returned recently from the Budapest Hungary missionary spoke to us.

In 1899 a missionary went to Hungary, but was banished.

He said that in 1987 there was a meeting with Hungary government officials.  In June of 1988 Hungary granted legal recognition to the church.

The Book of Mormon was first published in Hugarian in 1991.

Currently there are approximately 6000 members in Hungary.

Are we in the calm water or the fast water?  A fish in fast water has to make decisions quickly and may make a bad decision.

We should stay out of places and situations where we could make bad choices or have to make dangerous choices too quickly.

Are we spending our money on things that we don't need?

Weber Heights Stake Standards Night
Scott Sessions spoke to the youth.  He seemed to know everyone in the room.  Some he had in institute class.  Some he was related to.  I think he was even related to our bishop.  He said that he never knew his first name.  He always just called him Boomer.

We sit around and gripe about others, but don't reflect enough on what we should change about ourselves.

What if every sin had a distinctive smell like smoking does?  What would pornography smell like?  What would not doing your home  teaching smell like?  We all stink.

Revelation 3:21
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Ye are the temple of god, but you are also the temple president.  You are responsible for it.

You are a child of god.  He is a king and what are the children of a king called?

Have you told you face today that you are happy?

Matthew 5: 48
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

3 Nephi 12:48
48 Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.

Jesus didn't claim perfection until after his resurrection, so why are we so hard on ourselves for not bring perfect?  The account in Matthew was while he was on earth.  The account in 3 Nephi 12 is after he was resurrected.

Elders Quorum
"Chapter 41: The Postmortal Spirit World," Gospel Principles, (2009)
The post mortal world (paradise and prison) is a foyer to an eternal existence.

“Apparently the spirit world is incorporated with the physical world. The earth has a spirit in it just as our physical bodies have spirits in them. Elder Parley P. Pratt wrote that the spirit world ‘is here on the very planet where we were born; or in other words, the earth and other planets of like sphere, have their inward or spiritual spheres, as well as their outward, or temporal. The one is peopled by temporal tabernacles, and the other by spirits. A veil is drawn between the one sphere and the other, whereby all the objects in the spiritual sphere are rendered invisible to those in the temporal.’ (Key to Theology, 9th ed., Deseret Book, 1965, pp. 126–27.)” (Ensign January 1977, THE SPIRIT WORLD, OUR NEXT HOME)

“Spirit beings have the same bodily form as mortals except that the spirit body is in perfect form (see Ether 3:16). Spirits carry with them from earth their attitudes of devotion or antagonism toward things of righteousness (see Alma 34:34). They have the same appetites and desires that they had when they lived on earth. All spirits are in adult form. They were adults before their mortal existence, and they are in adult form after death, even if they die as infants or children (see Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith [1998], 131–32).” (Gospel Principles Chapter 41: The Postmortal Spirit World)

This life is a school and a test.  We are taught and prepared through the life experience for the responsibilities and blessings of eternal life.  When we go to elementary, high school, and college, depending on how we do determines how successful we are in the level of education and in finding and keeping a job.

Even though one of the parts of the post mortal life is paradise, it is not a fulness of eternal life.

Sunday School
The Corinthians had some problems:
-Being converted to the missionary that taught them and not the
gospel.  This caused divisions because people would say pridefully
that They are a convert of Paul or of this person or that.
-Greek philosophy
-They did not like the idea of being trapped in a body, so the
resurrection is hard for them.
-Being influenced by the god of war and Aphrodite, so they have
violence and morality issues.  Perhaps not too different than our day.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

There was some discussion about our bodies being a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit and some folks started to explore it from the perspective  that our body is not our own, but belongs to God.

They started related our bodies to being rentals, since it belongs to God and he has given it to us to use.  I have heard that a lot, but as I listened I started feel like if we are going to make a comparison like that, it is more like a company car.  We are given it to do company business with.  The company (Heavenly Father) buys the car, pays for the gas, and so forth.  We are to take car of it and not abuse it.  If we use it for our own purposes or in ways that are against company policy, there are consequences.

Again, its sole purpose it to further the business of the company.  If we use it for non company business we may lose it or our job may have to pay for it ourselves or at the very least will have to pay for the gas and repairs.

If we use our bodies for God's purposes then the Holy Ghost can dwell there.

Sacrament Service
Do we just go to church or do we worship?

Worship is to connect with God in deep and powerful ways,

We should incorporate the reverence of the temple into our Sunday worship.

“Followers of Christ are invited to ‘gather,’ ‘stand in holy places,’ and ‘be not moved’ (D&C 45:32; 87:8; 101:22; see also 2 Chronicles 35:5; Matthew 24:15). These holy places include temples, homes, and chapels. The presence of the Spirit and the behavior of those within these physical structures are what make them ‘holy places.’” (Church Handbook of Instructions Book 2, 1.4.1 Strengthening the Home)

Elder Robert C. Oaks, Worship through Reverence, Ensign, Dec 2009, 20–23
"Much of what we say in the Church about reverence usually focuses on being quiet in places of worship, with special emphasis on children being quiet. Certainly, quiet is a key part of reverence, but the full, rich meaning of the concept of reverence includes much more than the absence of noise and commotion. Quiet does not necessarily equal reverence."

From the Bulletin
"The ordinance of the sacrament makes sacrament meeting the most sacred and important meeting in the Church. It is the only Sabbath meeting the entire family can attend together. Its content, in addition to the sacrament, should always be planned and presented to focus our attention on the Atonement and teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. ...During sacrament meeting — and especially during the sacrament service — we should concentrate on worship and refrain from all other activities, especially from behavior that could interfere with the worship of others. Even a person who slips into quiet slumber does not interfere with others. Sacrament meeting is not a time for reading books or magazines. Young people, it is not a time for whispered conversations on cell phones or for texting persons at other locations. When we partake of the sacrament, we make a sacred covenant that we will always remember the Savior. How sad to see persons obviously violating that covenant in the very meeting where they are making it."
Dallin H. Oaks, Sacrament Meeting and the Sacrament, Ensign, Nov. 2008, 18-19

-How can teachers assist in personal gospel study?
-How can our gospel classrooms reinforce the importance of personal gospel study?
Teaching with questions (p. 68-70)
-What is the purpose of teaching with questions?
-How do questions help others to learn the gospel?
-What are the different kinds of questions we can ask? When is each most appropriate?
Facilitating Discussions (p. 63-65)
-Why do we use discussions so often in gospel instruction — at least for adults? -What separates a good gospel class discussion from a poor one?
-What techniques can a teacher use to maximize the effectiveness of discussions? -What techniques can a teacher use to keep discussions from going off track?
}

I was so engrossed in the discussion that I did not get any notes.
