Church Services This Week at Sullivan Hollow Second Ward Weber Heights Stake Ogden Utah March 3-13-2011

Matthew 13:15
15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Do we shut out a lesson because we have heard it before or because we don't want to work on the principle being presented?

Parable of the sower
Sowing is throwing seed
Wayside is the sidewalk or trampled down path.

When he says hear ye now the parable of the sower means to learn the parable.

The type of ground the seed falls on may depend on where we are in life in general or we may be different ground depending on what seed is thrown at us.  They may be certain principles of the gospel that we may be less willing to implement in our lives so in that instance we might be poor ground.

One of the talks was based on President Dieter F. Uchtdorf’s conference talk, Of Things That Matter Most, October 2011.

We were counseled to take the principles we learn today and determine which parts we need to address in our homes.

“How foolish to build an ark on dry ground with the sun shining and life moving forward as usual! But time ran out. … The floods came. The disobedient … were drowned. The miracle of the ark followed the faith manifested in its building.” (President Spencer W. Kimball, In Conference Report, Oct. 1952, 48.)

We should strive to have the spirit with us while we are preparing the lesson and not just when giving it.

"True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior. The study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior" (Elder Boyd K. Packer, in Conference Report, Oct. 1986, 20; or Ensign, Nov. 1986, 17)

Alma 32:28 - if we don't cast it out it will grow.
Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

Much of the Doctrine and Covenants was received as a result of Joseph reading the scriptures he was translating and asking questions to the Lord.
