Church Services This Week at Sullivan Hollow Second Ward Weber Heights Stake Ogden Utah 12 May 2013

Elders Quorum
Chapter 9 Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Lorenzo Snow
The instructor talked about family reunions.  We talked about why we have them.  We talked about traditions people have with their family reunions and things we do regularly for and with our families.

Everyone has the same opportunity for eternal life no matter their opportunity for the things of this world.

"Wives, be faithful to your husbands. I know you have to put up with many unpleasant things, and your husbands have to put up with some things as well. Doubtless you are sometimes tried by your husbands, on account perhaps of the ignorance of your husbands, or perchance at times because of your own ignorance. …
“… I do not say but that your husbands are bad—just as bad as you are, and probably some of them are worse; but, never mind: try to endure the unpleasantnesses which arise at times, and when you meet each other in the next life you will feel glad that you put up with those things.
To the husbands, I say: Many of you do not value your wives as you should. … Be kind to them. When they go out to meeting, you carry the baby at least half the time. When it needs rocking, and you have not much to do, rock it. Be kind when sometimes you have to make a little sacrifice to do so; feel kind anyway, no matter what the sacrifice" ( From the manual)

Lesson 17 -Tithing and Fasting
Doctrine and Covenants 117, 119, 120, 59
When tithing was first being done in the last days it was not just 10 percent, but included all offerings.

Doctrine and Covenants 117:4
 4 Let them repent of all their sins, and of all their covetous desires, before me, saith the Lord; for what is property unto me? saith the Lord.

These days when the church builds buildings they are not financed.  To me this seems like an example for our own lives.  Even though the financial geniuses of the world advise us to use credit to make more money with that credit.  I think the example of the Lord is to be free of the bondage of debt.

“...as revealed by the Lord, the use of tithing is determined by a council comprised of the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and the Presiding Bishopric. The Lord specifically states that the council’s work be directed “by mine own voice unto them.” 16 This council is called the Council on the Disposition of the Tithes.
It is remarkable to witness this council heed the Lord’s voice. Each member is aware of and participates in all the council’s decisions. No decision is made until the council is unanimous. All tithing funds are spent for the purposes of the Church, including welfare—care for the poor and needy—temples, buildings and upkeep of meetinghouses, education, curriculum—in short, the work of the Lord.” (Elder Robert D Hales, Tithing: A Test of Faith with Eternal Blessings, General Conference October 2002)
Doctrine and Covenants 78:13-14
 13 Behold, this is the preparation wherewith I prepare you, and the foundation, and the ensample which I give unto you, whereby you may accomplish the commandments which are given you;
 14 That through my providence, notwithstanding the tribulation which shall descend upon you, that the church may stand independent above all other creatures beneath the celestial world;

The lord gives us commandments for how to treat and manage a few things that we may be prepared to be rulers over many things.

Proverbs 22:6
6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Mosiah 27:14
 14 And again, the angel said: Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith.

All women are endowed with the stewardship of motherhood.  All have this responsibility and capability whether they have children or not.

Your efforts will impact the lives of others more than you will know.

Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels.” (In Conference Report, Oct. 1942, 7, 11–12.)

The scriptures say "and it came to pass" not "and it came to stay".  Trials pass.  Kids grow and leave home.

Look at the world through a child's eyes and the blessings and wonder.
