Church Services This Week at Sullivan Hollow Second Ward Weber Heights Stake Ogden Utah 13 October 2013

Elders Quorum
Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Lorenzo Snow  P225 Chapter 19
President Snow as a young man was prompted to serve a mission rather than pursue schooling right away.  He asked his friends and they said he should go to school, so he pursued that direction and ignored the prompting.   The prompting continued to weigh on him.  He ended up serving 10 missions.

Sunday School
In the 1930s the church established the Church welfare system.  The system helps people become self reliant.  The assistance the Church gives is designed to be temporary and designed to teach people to get off welfare.

In speaking of the Church Welfare System:
“Our primary purpose was to set up, in so far as it might be possible, a system under which the curse of idleness would be done away with, the evils of a dole abolished, and independence, industry, thrift and self respect be once more established amongst our people. The aim of the Church is to help the people to help themselves. Work is to be re-enthroned as the ruling principle of the lives of our Church membership.” (Conference Report, Oct. 1936, p. 3; italics added.)

Sacrament Service
A missionary that recently returned from the Florida Jacksonville Mission spoke to us.

A stake high councilor spoke to us about obedience.

Ether 12:27
27 And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

"These two channels are mutually reinforcing: knowledge encourages obedience (see Deuteronomy 5:27; Moses 5:11), and obedience enhances knowledge (see John 7:17; D&C 93:1)."(Elder Dallin H Oaks, “Testimony”, April 2008 General Conference)

“An additional promise in this revelation says we ‘shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures.’ 8 So by obedience we also gain knowledge. As the Savior said, ‘If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine.’9

Doctrine and Covenants 121:45
45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.

"The happiness of the Latter-day Saints, the peace of the Latter-day Saints, the progress of the Latter-day Saints, the prosperity of the Latter-day Saints, and the eternal salvation and exaltation of this people lie in walking in obedience to the counsels of … God." (President Gordon B. Hinckley, “If Ye Be Willing and Obedient,” Ensign, Dec. 1971, 125)

“When obedience ceases to be an irritant and becomes our quest, in that moment God will endow us with power” (President Ezra Taft Benson, in Donald L. Staheli, in Conference Report, Apr. 1998, 108;)
