Church Services This Week at Elkhart Second Ward South Bend Stake Elkhart Indiana 11 September 2016

Sacrament Service
A missionary that recently returned from Washington Spokane mission spoke to us. We often think of Washington as being rainy, but he said where he was they did not get much rain.

You start prayer by addressing the Father to show us who we are speaking to.

We close in the name of Jesus Christ.  Colossians 3:17
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

The missionary’s father and high councilman spoke.

He shared the stake theme:  Obedience to the commandments and covenants of the gospel lead to safety and peace.

Jeremiah 42:6
6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.

Jeremiah 42:16
16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.

Commandments and Covenants are the rules of the game. The game doesn't work if you break the rules.

Exodus 20:5-6

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Doctrine and Covenants 98:29

29 And then, if he shall come upon you or your children, or your children’s children unto the third and fourth generation, I have delivered thine enemy into thine hands;
30 And then if thou wilt spare him, thou shalt be rewarded for thy righteousness; and also thy children and thy children’s children unto the third and fourth generation.

Food storage can bring temporal peace. No matter what happens, our family has food to eat. No matter if we lose a job or the store gets sites down for a time or whatever.

Fasting is an exclamation point at the end of our prayer.

Mark 4:39-41
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Sunday School
Book of Mormon lesson 35
Samuel taught the people that peace would only come through obedience, but the people did not see that there was a problem with the way they were living.

We all have ways where we reject the words of the prophets and keep our favorite sins.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church:  Howard W Hunter chapter 17 -  Preserve and Protect the Family
When the proclamation on the family was given we knew it needed to be said, but it was setting a foundation to shore up against the really big onslaught on the family that was to come.  We had no idea the extent of what was coming and we likely have only seen a small part of what is yet coming.

Caring and committed home teachers are needed in each home. None should be neglected“ (The Teachings of Howard W. Hunter, ed. Clyde J. Williams (1997), 144.)

Or choices have impact on three and four generations after us. “to the third and fourth generation“.
