Church Services This Week at Oak Ridge Ward Layton North Stake Layton Utah Dec 28, 2025

Sacrament Service

First Speaker

“Although the details will differ, the tragedies, the unanticipated tests and trials, both physical and spiritual, come to each of us because this is mortality.” (Elder Neil L. Andersen, “Wounded”, October 2018 General Conference)

Our trials help us to be more observant and compassionate to others’ challenges.

In the section heading to DnC 98:

“On July 20, 1833, a mob destroyed Church property, tarred and feathered two Church members, and demanded that the Saints leave Jackson County.”

In the section heading to DnC 101:
“There had been many threats of death against members of the Church. The Saints in Jackson County had lost household furniture, clothing, livestock, and other personal property; and many of their crops had been destroyed.”

DnC 121

1 O God, where art thou? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place?

2 How long shall thy hand be stayed, and thine eye, yea thy pure eye, behold from the eternal heavens the wrongs of thy people and of thy servants, and thine ear be penetrated with their cries?

3 Yea, O Lord, how long shall they suffer these wrongs and unlawful oppressions, before thine heart shall be softened toward them, and thy bowels be moved with compassion toward them?

DnC 122

7 And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

The waves and the winds are what the Lord used to get the Nephites and Jerodites where they needed to go.

DnC 76:22

22 And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

John 14:18

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

“I testify that God lives, that He is our Eternal Father, that He loves each of us with a love divine.” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “‘An High Priest of Good Things to Come’”, October 1999 General Conference)

Next Speaker

“I never told you I was perfect—but there is no error in the revelations which I have taught” (The Words of Joseph Smith, ed. Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W. Cook [1980], 369).

The most important things are not Joseph Smith’s history, but the things that were restored through him.

2 Nephi 3

6 For Joseph truly testified, saying: A seer shall the Lord my God raise up, who shall be a choice seer unto the fruit of my loins.

7 Yea, Joseph truly said: Thus saith the Lord unto me: A choice seer will I raise up out of the fruit of thy loins; and he shall be esteemed highly among the fruit of thy loins. And unto him will I give commandment that he shall do a work for the fruit of thy loins, his brethren, which shall be of great worth unto them, even to the bringing of them to the knowledge of the covenants which I have made with thy fathers.

In old Christian speech “praise” meant to honor someone for their good character.  When we sing “Praise to the Man” we are not worshipping Joseph, but are honoring him for what he accomplished.  We praise him for the ways that he pointed people to Christ.

2 Nephi 25:26

26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

Elders Quorum

Lesson based on  “Look to God and Live” by Elder D. Todd Christofferson and “Do Your Part With All Heart” by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Ephesians 5:17

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Things in life can distract us from or obfuscate more important things. We can forget about them or ignore them.

1 Corinthians 12:1, 2, 9

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

We can also get out of practice at things that we should be doing regularly.

“Simply put, discipleship takes self-discipline.” - Elder Uchtdorf

“It is not a casual endeavor, and it doesn’t happen by accident.” - Elder Uchtdorf

Christmas Program

Hark the Herald Angels Sing - Hymn

Bring the real, sincere love of Christ to others all year round.

The true spirit of Christmas is revealed when we drop the last syllable and it becomes the spirit of Christ.

1 Nephi 19:12

12 And all these things must surely come, saith the prophet Zenos. And the rocks of the earth must rend; and because of the groanings of the earth, many of the kings of the isles of the sea shall be wrought upon by the Spirit of God, to exclaim: The God of nature suffers.

1 Nephi 20

2 Nevertheless, they call themselves of the holy city, but they do not stay themselves upon the God of Israel, who is the Lord of Hosts; yea, the Lord of Hosts is his name.

1 Nephi 21:26

26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I, the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

“Jesus Christ is also the light of the world because his example and his teachings illuminate the path we should walk to return to the presence of our Father in Heaven.” (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “‘The Light and Life of the World’”, October 1987 General Conference)

Mark 10:14

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

The primary children sang, “I’d Sing You a Song”

Christ’s return will be announced by angelic trumpets

“Glory to God in the highest” - (Hymn - “Far, Far Away on Judea’s Plains”)

Two young women sang “Still, Still, Still”

The choir sang “Away in a Manger”

Christ condescended that we might be lifted.

Mosiah 14

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

See also Isaiah 53.

The choir and congregation sang “What Child Is This?”.

Isaiah 7

14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

The name Emanuel is a promise.  God is with us and will always be with us.

“the great thing about the gospel is we get credit for trying, even if we don’t always succeed.” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Tomorrow the Lord Will Do Wonders among You”, April 2016 General Conference)

“My friends, my fellow disciples on the road of mortal life, our Father’s beautiful plan, even His ‘fabulous’ plan, is designed to bring you home, not to keep you out.” (Elder Patrick Kearon, “God’s Intent Is to Bring You Home”, April 2024 General Conference)

3 People sang “Oh Come Oh Come, Emanuel”.

Luke 2

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Isaiah 9

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Romans 8

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

We invite His presence to be part of us and He invites us to be His presence in the world.

“As this Christmas approaches, let us do more of what matters and much less of what doesn’t.” (Elder Patrick Kearon, “Bringing Christmas Into Focus”, 2019 Christmas Devotional)

The choir sang “Come Lord Jesus Come”.

Gift giving is one of the most widely practiced parts of Christmas.

With all of the gifts that the Lord has given to me, what can I give to Him.

The Lord rarely refers to His followers as Christians.  He more often refers to His followers as Saints.  He did not call His church the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Christians.

DnC 115

3 And also unto my faithful servants who are of the high council of my church in Zion, for thus it shall be called, and unto all the elders and people of my Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, scattered abroad in all the world;

4 For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

We must forgive all, no matter what they did or did not do.

The congregation sang “Joy to the World”.

Sacrament Service

First Speaker

Jesus lives.  Study The Living Christ document.  Christ is a benchmark for our own actions.

Next Speaker

Christ was sinless, but still was baptized.

Jesus often wept for us.

Hebrews 5:7

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

Christ’s love is infinite.

All of us are learning and growing, no matter how old we are.

Next Speaker

The most powerful message ever given is the life of Jesus Christ.

Christ is not just a historical figure.  He is the literal Savior of the world.

DnC 59

23 But learn that he who doeth the works of righteousness shall receive his reward, even peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come.

He lives.  He knows us.  He loves us.

Next Speaker

2 Nephi 25:2

2 For I, Nephi, have not taught them many things concerning the manner of the Jews; for their works were works of darkness, and their doings were doings of abominations.

Unclean things can’t dwell with God.

2 Nephi 2

27 Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.

Mark 14

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

It wasn’t just our sins that Christ took upon us.  He took on our feelings.  He took upon Himself what motivates us, so he could understand why we act the way we do.

Luke 23:46

46 ¶ And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Luke 23

34 ¶ Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Christ knew why He was doing what he was doing, even when going through it.

Combined Youth and Adult Utah Area Meeting

They showed a video message from the Utah Area Presidency and President Christofferson of the First Presidency.

“Joyfully Gathering Israel One by One in Christ” - Area Vision

“The work of gathering Heavenly Father’s family is not just for young people, and it is not just for grandparents. It is for everyone. We are all gatherers.

“This is the work of our generation, what the Apostle Paul called ‘the dispensation of the fulness of times,’ when he said God would ‘gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him’ (Ephesians 1:10).” (President Henry B. Eyring, “Gathering the Family of God”, April 2017 General Conference)

Testimonies

“Could I suggest that we see gratitude as a disposition, a way of life that stands independent of our current situation? In other words, I’m suggesting that instead of being thankful for things, we focus on being thankful in our circumstances—whatever they may be.” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Grateful in Any Circumstances”, April 2014 General Conference)

This life is temporary and the resurrection makes death not be permanent.

Helaman 10

13 But, behold, ye not only deny my words, but ye also deny all the words which have been spoken by our fathers, and also the words which were spoken by this man, Moses, who had such great power given unto him, yea, the words which he hath spoken concerning the coming of the Messiah.

14 Yea, did he not bear record that the Son of God should come? And as he lifted up the brazen serpent in the wilderness, even so shall he be lifted up who should come.

15 And as many as should look upon that serpent should live, even so as many as should look upon the Son of God with faith, having a contrite spirit, might live, even unto that life which is eternal.

What does it mean to receive the Holy Ghost?

     -John 16:7-8

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

    - What does it mean to reprove?

To formally point out an error or wrongdoing, often with the intent to correct or admonish.

Alma 42:8

8 Now behold, it was not expedient that man should be reclaimed from this temporal death, for that would destroy the great plan of happiness.

Sunday School

It will take us a lifetime to comprehend all that God has revealed.

How many children have died before the age of accountability and will inherit the celestial kingdom. Out of the 70 billion that ever lived on the earth how many billions are children that will inherit the celestial kingdom?

God is merciful and wants to save all His children as much as they allow him.

Moses 1:39

39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

First Presidency Christmas Devotional

President Susan H. Porter, “The Everlasting Light”

Luke 2:4–5

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

“Think with me about the young wife, Mary, alongside her caring husband, Joseph, traveling along the dusty road to Bethlehem, not knowing where they will stay or when her Son will be born.

“Now, add to this thought events taking place halfway around the world. There, in the land of Zarahemla on the American continent, a group of believers is sorrowing while they “watch steadfastly” for the sign of the Savior’s birth, which was prophesied by Samuel the Lamanite to be a day and a night and a day without darkness, for if the sign was not given, all the believers would be put to death.”

3 Nephi 1

13 Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the sign be given, and on the morrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.

“Can you imagine what that meant to the believers, to those who had longed for, lived for, and prayed for the fulfillment of this prophecy? Surely, they rejoiced! What a powerful witness that Jesus Christ came to earth to save all who will believe on His name. The sun had set, but the sky was filled with light.”

John 8:12

12 ¶ Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

“During our lives there will be times when the sun may go down on our hopes and dreams. The sun may go down when we experience loss or physical and emotional challenges. But because Jesus Christ came to earth and rose on the third day, triumphant over sin and death, there will be no permanent darkness at the going down of the sun. We can seek and find His life-giving light.”

“We, too, can then go on our way, ‘glorifying and praising God for all [we have] heard and seen.’”

“I bear my witness that Jesus Christ came to earth to bring joy and hope as He lights our way home.”

President Timothy L. Farnes,

Abraham 3:27

27 And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first.

“I think of His Resurrection, His glorious victory over death.

“And then I ask myself, ‘Am I accepting the gift He so joyfully offers?’ I have pondered that question many times”

“Our devotion to Jesus Christ is not like a school project that we turn in, hoping for a perfect score. Jesus Christ is the only perfect person, and His is the only perfect life. As we seek to improve, we turn to Him, and it’s not in a spirit of ‘I did it!’ or ‘I earned it!’ or ‘I arrived!’ but rather ‘I accept.’

“Of course, we want to live in a way that’s acceptable to the Lord. We naturally hope that He accepts our offering. But just as important—or perhaps more so—is the question ‘Do I accept His?’”

“Just as His sacrifice for us was voluntary, He wants us to accept it voluntarily.”

“lesson: It isn’t enough just to be in the same general area as the Savior. It’s not enough to be slightly tilted in His direction, or next to someone who is close to Him. To fully accept Christ’s gift, we each need to fully turn toward Him.”

“discover the joy of daily repentance.” (President Russell M. Nelson, “The Power of Spiritual Momentum,” Liahona, May 2022)

“I testify that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, willingly and lovingly and joyfully gave His life as a precious gift so that you and I can be healed, redeemed, and exalted.”

“I testify that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, willingly and lovingly and joyfully gave His life as a precious gift so that you and I can be healed, redeemed, and exalted. I pray that we will each fully turn to Jesus Christ and accept His gift—this Christmas, and every day of our lives.”

President Jeffrey R Holland, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”

“This Christmas, may I invite each of you to be, however briefly, a family for someone who is otherwise alone.”

“Perhaps this Christmas we can bless the life of someone who is still temporarily alone in a manner that makes them feel for a moment or for a meal or for an afternoon that they have been able to make it home for Christmas.”

President Henry B Eyring, “The Gift of Kindness”

“As we reflect on the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, His earthly ministry, and His glorious Atonement and Resurrection, we feel closer to Him. We feel of His kindness, majesty, and love.”

“Through the Savior’s willingness to ‘[descend] below all things,’ as requirements of His infinite Atonement, Jesus Christ offered the perfect gift and expression of love and hope.”

John 15:13

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

“As we consider these eternal gifts provided to us from the Father and the Son, we may wonder how our own gifts we share this Christmas season can appropriately reflect our devotion and gratitude to Them. I humbly declare that perhaps the most meaningful way to accomplish this worthy endeavor is by giving simple gifts of kindness to those we love. As we are kind and serve each other as the Savior would, even in the smallest of ways, we can become a channel of God’s grace to help those in our circle of influence feel the Savior’s love and hope”

Luke 19:5

5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchæus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

John 8:11

11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

3 Nephi 17:7

7 Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels are filled with mercy.

“As we each follow the Savior’s example of kindness during this special season, it can be done in many ways—service, charity, love, compassion, and forgiveness.”

“This Christmas, mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust. Write a letter. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Apologize. Try to understand. Examine your demands on others. Think first of someone else. … Be gentle. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love and then speak it again.” (Howard W. Hunter, “The Gifts of Christmas” (First Presidency Christmas Devotional, Dec. 4, 1994)

“I promise as we are prayerful and as we open our hearts and minds to the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, the Lord will direct us to find someone that He loves perfectly, who needs our kindness during this holiday season.”

“Love one another as Jesus loves you.

“Try to show kindness in all that you do.

“Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,

“For these are the things Jesus taught.” (“I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus,” Children’s Songbook of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 78.)
