“As we contemplate the decisions we make in our lives each day… if we choose Christ, we will have made the correct choice. “ - President Monson

Sacrament Service

First Speaker

“Jesus Christ set the perfect example of how to love and serve others. As priesthood holders, we have a duty to serve others. We can serve others as the Savior did in many ways, including administering priesthood ordinances, sharing the gospel with others, and performing simple, everyday acts of kindness.” (“Come Follow Me - For Young Women” and  “Come Follow Me - For Young Men” manuals)

Ammon's success in teaching the Lamanite king was in consistently serving him.

Mosiah 17

1 And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla.

2 Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.

3 But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.

The speaker talked about the Young Church Service Missionary program.

DnC 4:3

3 Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work;

Some that serve in the program could not go on missions, due to health challenges.  Some that serve came home early from their missions.

There are those that only live for discipleship.

“We can show our love for Heavenly Father by serving others with our heart, our might, our mind, and our strength. We can serve with our whole selves!” (“I Will Serve God with All My Heart, Might, Mind, and Strength”, Friend September 2013)

Mosiah 2:17

17 And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.

We have a responsibility to help our spiritual siblings return to Father.

We should learn to savor righteousness. We need to learn to be comfortable around goodness.

Heavenly Father built in ways for us to learn. Some call them weaknesses or imperfections.

Elders Quorum

What are some of the roles of the Sabbath?

-Rest from labor

-Renew/remember covenants

-Sacred time.  Help you to stand in holy places

-Service

Is doing service a contradiction to resting?

The Sabbath is the Lord's day, but it is made for man. Is that a contradiction?

Pharisees were more of political leaders and Sadducees were more of religious leaders.

“Your commitment to follow the Savior by making covenants with him and then keeping those covenants will open the door to every spiritual blessing and privilege available to men, women, and children everywhere. “ - President Russell M Nelson

“We have been instructed for years to follow at least four requirements in preparing for that which is to come.

First, gain an adequate education. Learn a trade or a profession to enable you to obtain steady employment that will provide remuneration sufficient to care for yourself and your family…Second, live strictly within your income and save something for a rainy day. Incorporate in your lives the discipline of budgeting that which the Lord has blessed you with…Third, avoid excessive debt. Necessary debt should be incurred only after careful, thoughtful prayer and after obtaining the best possible advice…Fourth, acquire and store a reserve of food and supplies that will sustain life.” (Elder L. Tom Perry, “If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear”, October 1995 General Conference)

Sometimes Mary’s sister Martha is misjudged in the story of Mary listening and Martha cleaning and doing the needful things of the house.  In the story of their brother, it showed how great her faith was.

Matthew 7:1-5 - Judgement

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:119

119 Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;

Luke 14

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse…

Matthew 26:36-46

36 ¶ Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

When we study, maybe ask questions you haven't heard asked before.

There is a time and a place for fear, obligation, and guilt. Other times it is pointless and doesn't help us grow and holds back.

.

A question that causes someone to act is from the spirit.

Alma 5:14

14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye spiritually been born of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty change in your hearts?

Ask questions that make people self evaluate.

Validate people that answer questions by following up with a question after their answer.

When we make mistakes, it is okay to go back rather than continuing in our misery trying to do it our own way.

The parable of the prodigal son.

2 Nephi 9

41 O then, my beloved brethren, come unto the Lord, the Holy One. Remember that his paths are righteous. Behold, the way for man is narrow, but it lieth in a straight course before him, and the keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there; and there is none other way save it be by the gate; for he cannot be deceived, for the Lord God is his name..

2 And that same sociality which exists among us here will exist among us there, only it will be coupled with eternal glory, which glory we do not now enjoy.

He asked us if we are paying for anyone outside of our stake. He then Anja us to think if anyone outside the stake is praying for some in our stake. He asked us to think about how those prayers will be answered and who the Lord will send to help them.

Alma 26:27

27 Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success.

As members of the Church we should be the best neighbors that our neighbors have ever had.

“This morning I speak about the power of the Book of Mormon and the critical need we have as members of this Church to study, ponder, and apply its teachings in our lives. The importance of having a firm and sure testimony of the Book of Mormon cannot be overstated.

“We live in a time of great trouble and wickedness. What will protect us from the sin and evil so prevalent in the world today? I maintain that a strong testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and of His gospel will help see us through to safety. If you are not reading the Book of Mormon each day, please do so. If you will read it prayerfully and with a sincere desire to know the truth, the Holy Ghost will manifest its truth to you. If it is true—and I solemnly testify that it is—then Joseph Smith was a prophet who saw God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.” (President Thomas S. Monson, “The Power of the Book of Mormon”, April 2017 General Conference)

When we make an excuse as to why we are exempt from the council of a prophet we are exempting ourself from the blessings that come from that council.

Article of Faith 10

10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.

10 I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.

We make five covenants in the temple.

Keeping our covenants decreases the ability of the destroyer to achieve his goals and strengthens us to obtain ours.

Genesis 1:26–28

26 ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

“It is important for us to understand, as we can learn from the scriptures, that God is eternal, that his creations are eternal, and that his truths are eternal. Therefore, when he gave Eve to Adam in marriage, that union would be eternal. Marriage as ordained of God and performed in his holy temples is eternal—not just until death.” (President N. Eldon Tanner, “Celestial Marriages and Eternal Families”, April 1980 General Conference)

The temple is a shield and protector.

Love does not envy.  It always protects.

1 John 4:20

20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

Mosiah 4:14-15

14 And ye will not suffer your children that they go hungry, or naked; neither will ye suffer that they transgress the laws of God, and fight and quarrel one with another, and serve the devil, who is the master of sin, or who is the evil spirit which hath been spoken of by our fathers, he being an enemy to all righteousness.

15 But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another.

“Self-reliance is more than having a good job, food storage, or money in the bank. Rather, it is “the ability, commitment, and effort to provide the spiritual and temporal necessities of life for self and family. As [Church] members become self-reliant, they are also better able to serve and care for others” as they enthrone work as a ruling principle in their lives.” (“Let Us Be Self-Reliant and Independent”, October 2017 Ensign)

“Only when we are self-reliant can we truly emulate the Savior in serving and blessing others” (Robert D Hales, “A Gospel Vision of Welfare: Faith in Action,” in Basic Principles of Welfare and Self-Reliance [booklet, 2009], 2).

“The aim of the Church’s self-reliance initiative is to help individuals receive personal revelation through obedience to key gospel principles. Facilitators are called to create an environment [through interactive discussion] where such revelation can occur, because it is the Holy Ghost, not a teacher, who can teach someone ‘all things what ye should do’ (2 Nephi 31:3; 32:5).” (You’re Invited: An Overview of Self-Reliance Services for Priesthood Leaders (booklet, 2016), 11.)

Helaman 10:5

5 And now, because thou hast done this with such unwearyingness, behold, I will bless thee forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and in works; yea, even that all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will.

What we are becoming is more important than what we are doing.

“No righteous man is ever taken before his time. In the case of the faithful Saints, they are simply transferred to other fields of labor. The Lord’s work goes on in this life, in the world of spirits, and in the kingdoms of glory where men go after their resurrection.” (President Joseph Fielding Smith, Funeral Services of Elder Richard L. Evans, Ensign, Dec. 1971)

Moses 1:39

39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

Heading of chapter 14 in “The Power of Everyday Missionaries”

Next Speaker

“Around the Church I hear many who struggle with this issue: ‘I am just not good enough.’ ‘I fall so far short.’ ‘I will never measure up’ I hear this from teenagers. I hear it from missionaries. I hear it from new converts. I hear it from lifelong members. One insightful Latter-day Saint, Sister Darla Isackson, has observed that Satan has somehow managed to make covenants and commandments seem like curses and condemnations. For some he has turned the ideals and inspiration of the gospel into self-loathing and misery-making.” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Be Ye Therefore Perfect—Eventually”, October 2017 General Conference)

Discouragement is one of Satan’s most effective tools.

“To all of our mothers everywhere, past, present, or future, I say, ‘Thank you. Thank you for giving birth, for shaping souls, for forming character, and for demonstrating the pure love of Christ.’ To Mother Eve, to Sarah, Rebekah, and Rachel, to Mary of Nazareth, and to a Mother in Heaven, I say, ‘Thank you for your crucial role in fulfilling the purposes of eternity.’ To all mothers in every circumstance, including those who struggle—and all will—I say, ‘Be peaceful. Believe in God and yourself. You are doing better than you think you are. In fact, you are saviors on Mount Zion, and like the Master you follow, your love “never faileth.”’ I can pay no higher tribute to anyone.” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Behold Thy Mother”, October 2015 General Conference)

We should not doubt our device heritage.

Introduction to the Old Testament

Article of Faith 8

“We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”

The Pearl of Great Price contains the books of Moses and Abraham. It contains additional information about the Old Testament time period and many things for our day.

Jesus is the god of this world. The Father is in charge, but Christ is given responsibility to create the Earth, govern the Earth, and redeem the Earth.

Moses is a type of Christ. His life is a symbol of things in Christ’s life.

Luke 2:49

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

Elders Quorum

What does it mean to give service?

“Brethren, God is faithful. Through the Holy Spirit, He will speak to our minds and hearts concerning the path we should follow during each segment of our lives.

“If our hearts are pure—if we seek not our own glory but the glory of Almighty God, if we seek to do His will, if we desire to bless the lives of our family and fellowman—we will not be left to walk alone. As President Monson has often reminded us, ‘When we are on the Lord’s errand, we are entitled to the Lord’s help.’

“Your Heavenly Father “will go before your face. [He] will be on your right hand and on your left, and [His] Spirit shall be in your hearts, and [His] angels round about you, to bear you up.’

“My dear brethren, divine blessings for priesthood service are activated by our diligent efforts, our willingness to sacrifice, and our desire to do what is right. Let us be the ones to act and not be acted upon. Preaching is fine, but sermons that do not lead to action are like fires without heat or water that cannot quench thirst.

“It is in the application of doctrine that the purifying flame of the gospel grows and the power of the priesthood ignites our souls.

“Thomas Edison, the man who bathed the world in glowing electric light, said that ‘the value of an idea lies in the using of it.’ In a similar way, gospel doctrine becomes more precious when it is put to use.

“We must not allow the doctrines of the priesthood to lie dormant in our hearts and unapplied in our lives. If there is a marriage or family in need of rescue—perhaps even our own—let’s not just wait and see. Rather, let us thank God for the plan of happiness that includes faith, repentance, forgiveness, and new beginnings. Applying priesthood doctrine will qualify us as husbands, as fathers, as sons who understand the why of the priesthood and its power to recapture and secure the beauty and holiness of eternal families.” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “The Why of Priesthood Service”, April 2012 General Conference)

Service with real intent brings a spirit with it that makes a real impact in ourselves.
