Church Services This Week at Utah Regional Conference 28 Oct 2018

Utah Regional Conference

LeGrand R. Curtis Jr.

He related how his mom took extensive notes in church meetings.

With the new “Come Follow Me” for the home, grandparents could also support this, even if they live far away.

“The new home-centered, Church-supported integrated curriculum has the potential to unleash the power of families, as each family follows through conscientiously and carefully to transform their home into a sanctuary of faith. I promise that as you diligently work to remodel your home into a center of gospel learning, over time your Sabbath days will truly be a delight. Your children will be excited to learn and to live the Savior’s teachings, and the influence of the adversary in your life and in your home will decrease. Changes in your family will be dramatic and sustaining.” (President Russell M. Nelson, “Becoming Exemplary Latter-day Saints”, October 2018 General Conference)

Deuteronomy 6

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Dnc 93

39 And that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers.

40 But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth.

“The plan designed by the Father contemplates that man and woman, husband and wife, working together, fit each child individually with a shield of faith made to buckle on so firmly that it can neither be pulled off nor penetrated by those fiery darts.

“It takes the steady strength of a father to hammer out the metal of it and the tender hands of a mother to polish and fit it on. Sometimes one parent is left to do it alone. It is difficult, but it can be done.

“In the Church we can teach about the materials from which a shield of faith is made: reverence, courage, chastity, repentance, forgiveness, compassion. In church we can learn how to assemble and fit them together. But the actual making of and fitting on of the shield of faith belongs in the family circle. Otherwise it may loosen and come off in a crisis.” (President Boyd K. Packer, “‘The Shield of Faith’”, April 1995 General Conference)

“It is my message and testimony to you today, my young friends, that for the most important questions of your eternal lives, there are answers in the scriptures and in the words and testimonies of apostles and prophets. The fact that these words come largely from older men, past and present, doesn’t make them any less relevant. In fact, it makes their words even more valuable to you because they come from those who have learned much through years of devout living.” (Elder M. Russell Ballard, “Learning the Lessons of the Past”, April 2009 General Conference)

Sister Lisa L. Harkness

Articles of Faith

9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

“If you will accept this invitation with full purpose of heart, the Lord will help you find a way to achieve it. And, as you prayerfully study, I promise that the heavens will open for you. The Lord will bless you with increased inspiration and revelation.” (President Russell M. Nelson, “Sisters’ Participation in the Gathering of Israel”, October 2018 General Conference)

“The Book of Mormon both illuminates the teachings of the Master and exposes the tactics of the adversary.” (President Russell M. Nelson, “The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?”, October 2017 General Conference)

1 Nephi 19:5–6

5 And an account of my making these plates shall be given hereafter; and then, behold, I proceed according to that which I have spoken; and this I do that the more sacred things may be kept for the knowledge of my people.

6 Nevertheless, I do not write anything upon plates save it be that I think it be sacred. And now, if I do err, even did they err of old; not that I would excuse myself because of other men, but because of the weakness which is in me, according to the flesh, I would excuse myself.

1 Nephi 2:12

12 And thus Laman and Lemuel, being the eldest, did murmur against their father. And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them.

Mosiah 10:14

14 And his brethren were wroth with him because they understood not the dealings of the Lord; they were also wroth with him upon the waters because they hardened their hearts against the Lord.

1 Nephi 10

17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.

Sanitize our homes from murmuring.

Bishop W Christopher Waddell

Do not look at the reduced church schedule to be a pulling back from sabbath observance.

Moroni 6:5–7

5 And the church did meet together oft, to fast and to pray, and to speak one with another concerning the welfare of their souls.

6 And they did meet together oft to partake of bread and wine, in remembrance of the Lord Jesus.

7 And they were strict to observe that there should be no iniquity among them; and whoso was found to commit iniquity, and three witnesses of the church did condemn them before the elders, and if they repented not, and confessed not, their names were blotted out, and they were not numbered among the people of Christ.

3 Nephi 18

6 And this shall ye always observe to do, even as I have done, even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you.

DnC 20

75 It is expedient that the church meet together often to partake of bread and wine in the remembrance of the Lord Jesus;

Alma 25:15-16

15 Yea, and they did keep the law of Moses; for it was expedient that they should keep the law of Moses as yet, for it was not all fulfilled. But notwithstanding the law of Moses, they did look forward to the coming of Christ, considering that the law of Moses was a type of his coming, and believing that they must keep those outward performances until the time that he should be revealed unto them.

16 Now they did not suppose that salvation came by the law of Moses; but the law of Moses did serve to strengthen their faith in Christ; and thus they did retain a hope through faith, unto eternal salvation, relying upon the spirit of prophecy, which spake of those things to come.

“The ordinances of salvation and exaltation administered in the Lord’s restored Church are far more than rituals or symbolic performances. Rather, they constitute authorized channels through which the blessings and powers of heaven can flow into our individual lives.” (Elder David A. Bednar, “Always Retain a Remission of Your Sins”, April 2016 General Conference)

Mosiah 3:17

17 And moreover, I say unto you, that there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come unto the children of men, only in and through the name of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent.

“So is the powerful effect over time of the small and simple things we are taught in the scriptures and by living prophets. Consider the scripture study we’ve been taught to incorporate into our daily lives. Or consider the personal prayers and the kneeling family prayers that are regular practices for faithful Latter-day Saints. Consider attendance at seminary for youth or institute classes for young adults. Though each of these practices may seem to be small and simple, over time they result in powerful spiritual uplift and growth.” (President Dallin H. Oaks, “Small and Simple Things”, April 2018 General Conference)

Alma 26

11 But Ammon said unto him: I do not boast in my own strength, nor in my own wisdom; but behold, my joy is full, yea, my heart is brim with joy, and I will rejoice in my God.

12 Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.

The home should be a center of gospel study.

Alma 56

47 Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the liberty of their fathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.

The Sabbath is more about what we can do, rather than what we should avoid.

John 5

8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

3 Nephi 18

24 Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do. Behold ye see that I have prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed.

3 Nephi 27

21 Verily, verily, I say unto you, this is my gospel; and ye know the things that ye must do in my church; for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do;

Elder M Russell Ballard

You have to be patient with your children, but they do grow up.

Galatians 1

6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

Life is a test.

Matthew 24

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

If you don't stay focused on the simple principles, you can be shaken by those that would try to deceive you.

Do not be casual in listening to the voices of the Lord's servants, because you have them so close to you.

Encourage an increased focus on the Savior.

We are each responsible for our own spiritual growth.

Be careful to not over program your children.

Sacrament Service

Bulletin

“When we choose to have faith, we are prepared to stand in the presence of God.”-Elder Robert D Hales

First Speaker

Speaking with the Spirit

“While we are all teachers, we must fully realize that it is the Holy Ghost who is the real teacher and witness of all truth.” (Matthew O. Richardson, “Teaching after the Manner of the Spirit”, October 2011 General Conference)

“Joseph learned that he could not translate without the help of the Holy Ghost. One morning he was upset with Emma over something she had done. When he tried to translate, he found that he could not translate at all. Joseph went out into the orchard to pray and ask the Lord why he could not translate. He soon realized that he needed to make peace with Emma before he could have the help of the Holy Ghost. He came back into the house and asked Emma’s forgiveness. He was then able to continue with the translation.” (“Primary 5: Doctrine and Covenants and Church History”, Lesson 7: “Joseph Smith Translates the Gold Plates)

Next Speaker

Alma 26:12

12 Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.

Act 10:34-35

34 ¶ Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

DnC 50:22

22 Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together.

Always seek and find a way to grow.

John 14:26

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

“If you define hypocrite as someone who fails to live up perfectly to what he or she believes, then we are all hypocrites. None of us is quite as Christlike as we know we should be. But we earnestly desire to overcome our faults and the tendency to sin. With our heart and soul we yearn to become better with the help of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

“If these are your desires, then regardless of your circumstances, your personal history, or the strength of your testimony, there is room for you in this Church. Come, join with us!” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Come, Join with Us”, October 2013 General Conference)

The Sabbath Day

How do we hallow the Sabbath day? In my much younger years, I studied the work of others who had compiled lists of things to do and things not to do on the Sabbath. It wasn’t until later that I learned from the scriptures that my conduct and my attitude on the Sabbath constituted a sign between me and my Heavenly Father. With that understanding, I no longer needed lists of dos and don’ts. When I had to make a decision whether or not an activity was appropriate for the Sabbath, I simply asked myself, ‘What sign do I want to give to God?’ That question made my choices about the Sabbath day crystal clear. (Elder Russell M. Nelson, “The Sabbath Is a Delight”, April 2015 General Conference)

When we observe the Sabbath we justify ourselves to God. As we partake of the spirit on the Sabbath it can sanctify us.

“President Nelson has acknowledged with gratitude how much is being accomplished as a result of your faithfulness to previous invitations. He and the entire leadership of the Church desire to bring greater gospel joy—to parents, children, youth, singles, the elderly, new converts, and those people the missionaries are teaching—through a home-centered, Church-supported, balanced effort. The purposes and blessings associated with this adjustment and other recent changes include the following:

“Deepening conversion to Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthening faith in Them.

“Strengthening individuals and families through home-centered, Church-supported curriculum that contributes to joyful gospel living.

“Honoring the Sabbath day, with a focus on the ordinance of the sacrament.

“Helping all of Heavenly Father’s children on both sides of the veil through missionary work and receiving ordinances and covenants and blessings of the temple.”

“World conditions increasingly require deepening individual conversion to and strengthening faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and His Atonement. The Lord has prepared us, line upon line, for the perilous times that we now face. In recent years, the Lord has guided us to address related core concerns, including:

“Honoring the Sabbath day and the sacred ordinance of the sacrament has again been emphasized for the last three years.

“Under the bishop’s direction, strengthened elders quorums and Relief Societies are focused on the purpose and divinely appointed responsibilities of the Church and helping members make and keep sacred covenants.

“Ministering in a higher and holier way is being joyfully adopted.

“Beginning with the end in mind, temple covenants and family history service are becoming a purposeful part of the covenant path.” (Elder Quentin L. Cook, “Deep and Lasting Conversion to Heavenly Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”, October 2018 General Conference)

Dnc 121:45-46

45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.

46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth; and thy dominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.

Elders Quorum

The lesson was based on the talk by Elder Ronald A Rasband, “Be Not Troubles”, October 2018 General Conference.

What are our fears?

Fear can spoil the good times. Don't focus on the fear of the unknown. Lean into the joy of what is good.

DnC 38

30 I tell you these things because of your prayers; wherefore, treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.

The teacher referenced part of a conference talk Elder Neal A Maxwell gave.  The section cautioned against doing risk recreational things.  I didn’t catch which talk it was.

Stand in Holy places and we will have less fear.

Is our church attendance where it needs to be? Is our temple attendance where it needs to be? Is our attendance at home where it needs to be?

Bulletin

Dnc 1:38

38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

Testimonies

A young man announced that he had been called on a mission to the Kansas Wichita Mission.

Speakers in General Conference told us several times to stay on the covenant path.

Thou Hast Done Wonderful Things - lesson 37

Handout from the teacher

{

  • Isaiah 22:22
22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
"key of the house of David" is symbolic of Christ's right to admit or exclude anyone from Father's presence,

    • What did the Savior do to admit us? What must we do to enter? (2 Nephi 31:13)

    • 2 Nephi 2:40, 50 —Come to Christ, find rest and respite there.

  • Isaiah 24:21-22
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

  • What prison is this? Why are they there?

  • D&C 138:32-33, 35 g-- why is this so wondrous? What a blessing!

  • Isaiah 25:1-4
1 O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.

2 For thou hast made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.
3 Therefore shall the strong people glorify thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee.

4 For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

Isaiah 32:1-2
1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.
2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

What do these images mean in your life? Have you had experiences to confirm any of these?

  • Refuge, storm

  • Shadow, heat

  • Hiding place, wind

  • Covert (cover), tempest

  • River, dry place

  • Shadow of a rock, weary (thirsty) land

  • Isaiah 25:6-9

    • Mountain = temple, feast of words and teachings of Christ. Why is the temple a feast for our souls? What is a veil? What is this veil in vs. 7?
      Moses 7:26
26 And he beheld Satan; and he had a great chain in his hand, and it veiled the whole face of the earth with darkness; and he looked up and laughed, and his angels rejoiced.
      2 Nephi 30:5-6, 8
5 And the gospel of Jesus Christ shall be declared among them; wherefore, they shall be restored unto the knowledge of their fathers, and also to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, which was had among their fathers.

6 And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a pure and a delightsome people.
8 And it shall come to pass that the Lord God shall commence his work among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, to bring about the restoration of his people upon the earth.

Come to the temple brothers, and sisters!

  • Isaiah 26:19
19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

    • As Jesus is resurrected so shall we all. What kind of wording do we find in this verse?

    • What is the mood? Why?

    • Alma 11:45
45 Now, behold, I have spoken unto you concerning the death of the mortal body, and also concerning the resurrection of the mortal body. I say unto you that this mortal body is raised to an immortal body, that is from death, even from the first death unto life, that they can die no more; their spirits uniting with their bodies, never to be divided; thus the whole becoming spiritual and immortal, that they can no more see corruption.

When the voice calls for the dead to arise, ... what would be the first joy of my heart? To meet my father, my mother, my brother, my sister; and when they are by my side, I embrace them and they me.
      —Joseph Smith Jr.

  • Isaiah 28:16
16 ¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

    • Jesus Christ is the only sure foundation. Why is Christ referred to as a "tried stone"? What other kinds of foundations exist today? Why is Christ the only sure foundation?

  • Isaiah 29:4, 9-14, 18, 24
4 And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.
9 ¶ Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.
10 For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
13 ¶ Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
18 ¶ And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

  • Words of ancient prophets to be restored Book of Mormon (Moroni 10:27)

  • Spiritual darkness, no prophets with authority

  • Prophesy of Martin Harris, Prof. Charles Anthon, and Book of Mormon characters

  • Men will draw hear to God with lips but not with heart (why is this a problem? How can we ensure we do better?)

  • God will do a marvelous work and wonder — the restoration! (1 Nephi 14:7)

  • Book of Mormon will help spiritually blind to see (what has it helped you see?)

  • Isaiah 30:19—21
19 For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.
20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.

Why does he say the "bread of adversity" and the "water of affliction"? What will the Savior do when adversity comes?

}

It is Christ's right to admit or exclude anyone from the Father's presence. The holy of holies in the Jewish temple was symbolic of God's presence.

Satan casts a great chain that veils the earth. Satan casts a mist of darkness over the earth. These confuse people and make it difficult to see what is true. Difficult to see our true selves.

Elders Quorum

Matthew 19

20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

9th Article of Faith

9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

Mormon 8

10 And there are none that do know the true God save it be the disciples of Jesus, who did tarry in the land until the wickedness of the people was so great that the Lord would not suffer them to remain with the people; and whether they be upon the face of the land no man knoweth.

11 But behold, my father and I have seen them, and they have ministered unto us.

Increase mentoring. Increase mentoring between elder and high priest. Increase mentoring between elder and relief society. Increase mentoring between us and those we minister to.
