“The greatest service we can provide to others in this life, beginning with our own families, is to bring them to Christ.” - Elder D Todd Christofferson

Sacrament Service

First Speaker

Isaiah 46

10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

Abraham 2

8 My name is Jehovah, and I know the end from the beginning; therefore my hand shall be over thee.

“No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted,” taught Elder Orson F. Whitney. “It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, … and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire.” (Elder Whitney was an apostle from 1906–1931. As quoted by Spencer W. Kimball in “Faith Precedes the Miracle” (1972), 98.)

Do we tell the Lord, “Thy will be done.” or “They will be done, but let’s think about it this way.”?

Matthew 14 - Jesus walking on the sea.

Next Speaker

Daniel 1:20

20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

Daniel 3

14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.

17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

Isaiah 55

8 ¶ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Are we willing to accept the “but if not”, as Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednigo were, if Father lets disaster temporarily befall us?

Job 2

10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

“When you face adversity, you can be led to ask many questions. Some serve a useful purpose; others do not. To ask, Why does this have to happen to me? Why do I have to suffer this, now? What have I done to cause this? will lead you into blind alleys. It really does no good to ask questions that reflect opposition to the will of God. Rather ask, What am I to do? What am I to learn from this experience? What am I to change? Whom am I to help? How can I remember my many blessings in times of trial? Willing sacrifice of deeply held personal desires in favor of the will of God is very hard to do. Yet, when you pray with real conviction, ‘Please let me know Thy will’ and ‘May Thy will be done,’ you are in the strongest position” (Elder Richard G. Scott, “Trust in the Lord”, October 1995 General Conference)

Job 38:4, 7

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.

7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Moses 1:3, 33

3 And God spake unto Moses, saying: Behold, I am the Lord God Almighty, and Endless is my name; for I am without beginning of days or end of years; and is not this endless?

33 And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.

Mark 9

17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

Alma 32

21 And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

Dnc 76:40

40 And this is the gospel, the glad tidings, which the voice out of the heavens bore record unto us

Lesson 27

1 Kings 11-14;2 Chronicles 17,20

Who has been a leader / influencer in your life?

Attributes of good leaders: 1. They serve 2. They have courage, trust, and faith. 3. They teach from the scriptures.

Joint Priesthood / Relief Society

“I have come to know that thoughts, like water, will stay on course if we make a place for them to go. Otherwise, our thoughts follow the course of least resistance, always seeking the lower levels. Probably the greatest challenge and the most difficult thing you will face in mortal life is to learn to control your thoughts. In the Bible it says, as a man “thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). Those who can control their thoughts have conquered themselves.“ (President Boyd K. Packer, “Worthy Music, Worthy Thoughts”, April 2008 General Conference)

Jarom 1:11-12

11 Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them.

12 And it came to pass that by so doing they kept them from being destroyed upon the face of the land; for they did prick their hearts with the word, continually stirring them up unto repentance.

“The Holy Ghost enlarges our minds, our hearts, and our understanding; helps us subdue weaknesses and resist temptation; inspires humility and repentance; guides and protects us in miraculous ways; and gifts us with wisdom, divine encouragement, peace of mind, a desire to change, and the ability to differentiate between the philosophies of men and revealed truth.” (Sheri L. Dew, “We Are Not Alone”, October 1998 General Conference)

The speaker referenced the February 2018 New Era article, “How You Talk to Yourself Matters”

The language we use in speaking to ourselves is as important as the language we use in speaking to others

“How you communicate should reflect who you are as a son or daughter of God. Clean and intelligent language is evidence of a bright and wholesome mind. Good language that uplifts, encourages, and compliments others invites the Spirit to be with you. Our words, like our deeds, should be filled with faith, hope, and charity” (For the Strength of Youth [booklet, 2011], 20).

“ positive and negative thoughts cannot occupy the mind at the same time.” (Dr. Craig L. Manning, “The Power of Your Words”, BYU Speech January 31, 2017)

1 Kings 3:5-9

5 ¶ In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.

6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.

7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.

8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.

9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

What is the opposite of an understanding heart? Enmity?

Elders Quorum

Taking the Lord’s name in vain is about doing evil with the Lord's name.  Unrighteous dominion falls in this as well.

Dnc 63:61-62

61 Wherefore, let all men beware how they take my name in their lips—

62 For behold, verily I say, that many there be who are under this condemnation, who use the name of the Lord, and use it in vain, having not authority.

“‘And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent’ (John 17:3; see also D&C 88:4–5.) This is the ultimate significance of taking upon us the name of Jesus Christ.” (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “Taking upon Us the Name of Jesus Christ”, April 1985 General Conference)

When we partake of the Sacrament we witness that we are willing to take the name of Jesus Christ.

“Many scriptural references to the name of the Lord seem to be references to the work of his kingdom. Thus, when Peter and the other Apostles were beaten, they rejoiced ‘that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.’ (Acts 5:41.) Paul wrote certain members who had ministered to the Saints that the Lord would not forget the labor of love they had ‘shewed toward his name.’ (Heb. 6:10.) According to this meaning, by witnessing our willingness to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ, we signify our willingness to do the work of his kingdom.” (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, “Taking upon Us the Name of Jesus Christ”, April 1985 General Conference)

Deuteronomy 12:11

11 Then there shall be a place which the Lord your God shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Lord:

1 Kings 5:5

5 And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.

Baptism justifies us. The Holy Ghost can sanctify us through higher covenants than baptism.

Do we keep our covenants with precision or just close enough?

3 Nephi 27:7-8

7 Therefore, whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name; therefore ye shall call the church in my name; and ye shall call upon the Father in my name that he will bless the church for my sake.

8 And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.

A missionary that returned from a mission to San Diego a year ago.

Helaman 3

24 And it came to pass that in this same year there was exceedingly great prosperity in the church, insomuch that there were thousands who did join themselves unto the church and were baptized unto repentance.

Helaman 12:2

2 Yea, and we may see at the very time when he doth prosper his people, yea, in the increase of their fields, their flocks and their herds, and in gold, and in silver, and in all manner of precious things of every kind and art; sparing their lives, and delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; softening the hearts of their enemies that they should not declare wars against them; yea, and in fine, doing all things for the welfare and happiness of his people; yea, then is the time that they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God, and do trample under their feet the Holy One—yea, and this because of their ease, and their exceedingly great prosperity.

2 Nephi 5:11, 13

11 And the Lord was with us; and we did prosper exceedingly; for we did sow seed, and we did reap again in abundance. And we began to raise flocks, and herds, and animals of every kind.

13 And it came to pass that we began to prosper exceedingly, and to multiply in the land.

What are useless cares?  Facebook, Netflix, longer than necessary hours at work, sports.  In excess, all things become useless cares.

“There is something about reviewing the lessons of the past to prepare us to face the challenges of the future. What a glorious legacy of faith, courage, and ingenuity those noble early Mormon pioneers have left for us to build upon. My admiration for them deepens the longer I live.” (Elder L. Tom Perry, “The Past Way of Facing the Future”, October 2009 General Conference)

“We must be sure that the legacy of faith received from them is never lost.” (Elder M. Russell Ballard, “Faith in Every Footstep”, October 1996 General Conference)

Elders Quorum

Define the word church.

-building for religious purposes

-family

-organized

-defines who you are.

3 Nephi 26:21

21 And they who were baptized in the name of Jesus were called the church of Christ.

Dnc 20:37

37 And again, by way of commandment to the church concerning the manner of baptism—All those who humble themselves before God, and desire to be baptized, and come forth with broken hearts and contrite spirits, and witness before the church that they have truly repented of all their sins, and are willing to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end, and truly manifest by their works that they have received of the Spirit of Christ unto the remission of their sins, shall be received by baptism into his church.

Baptism brings membership and demonstrates discipleship.

“What is most important in our Church responsibilities is not the statistics that are reported or the meetings that are held but whether or not individual people—ministered to one at a time just as the Savior did—have been lifted and encouraged and ultimately changed.” (M. Russell Ballard, “O Be Wise,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2006, 20.)

David was arguably the most successful king of Israel. He united all the tribes of Israel.

3 Nephi 17:1-3

1 Behold, now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he looked round about again on the multitude, and he said unto them: Behold, my time is at hand.

2 I perceive that ye are weak, that ye cannot understand all my words which I am commanded of the Father to speak unto you at this time.

3 Therefore, go ye unto your homes, and ponder upon the things which I have said, and ask of the Father, in my name, that ye may understand, and prepare your minds for the morrow, and I come unto you again.

Matthew 16:13-16

13 ¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Establish good friendships. Be a good friend.

Can someone treat you horribly and still have peace like David as Saul kept coming at him?  It is if you keep the spirit with you through obedience.

Why is it hard to have joy in the successes or accomplishments of others.

What can you do to make yourself a better friend.

Saul's feet being covered meant that he was using the restroom.

Elders Quorum

The lesson was based on President Dieter F Uchtorf’s “Lift Where You Stand” talk.

Everyone needs to lift to be effective, not just the strongest ones. Everyone should be unified and lift together.

You don't have to look far away for a way to help. Help where you are. In your home. In your neighborhood. In your city.
