First Speaker

2 Nephi 9:39

39 O, my beloved brethren, remember the awfulness in transgressing against that Holy God, and also the awfulness of yielding to the enticings of that cunning one. Remember, to be carnally-minded is death, and to be spiritually-minded is life eternal.

“Attacks against the Church, its doctrine, and our way of life are going to increase. Because of this, we need women who have a bedrock understanding of the doctrine of Christ and who will use that understanding to teach and help raise a sin-resistant generation. We need women who can detect deception in all of its forms. We need women who know how to access the power that God makes available to covenant keepers and who express their beliefs with confidence and charity. We need women who have the courage and vision of our Mother Eve.” (President Russell M. Nelson, “A Plea to My Sisters”, October 2015 General Conference)

Church is supplemental to our teaching at home.

Help children understand the doctrine of repentance.

Repentance is not shameful.  It is joyful.

“For years Church leaders have been emphasizing that home is the best place to live, learn, and teach the gospel, and gospel learning and teaching should be part of our daily lives, not confined to Sunday classes.” (Church News 6 July 2018)

“Several years ago in Africa I learned how dangerously invisible crocodiles can be. I then warned our youth about unseen spiritual crocodiles lying in wait to destroy them.

“Those invisible dangers have greatly increased in number, and now there are many kinds of them.” (President Boyd K. Packer, “The Word of Wisdom: The Principle and the Promises”, April 1996 General Conference)

“My dear brothers and sisters, we are living in the most crucial era in the history of the world,” he said on Saturday evening, September 15. “Since the beginning of time, prophets have foreseen our day and prophesied about what would take place during this winding-up period before the Savior comes again.” (President Russell M. Nelson, speaking at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington, on Saturday, September 15, 2018)

3 Nephi 17:11-17

11 And it came to pass that he commanded that their little children should be brought.

12 So they brought their little children and set them down upon the ground round about him, and Jesus stood in the midst; and the multitude gave way till they had all been brought unto him.

13 And it came to pass that when they had all been brought, and Jesus stood in the midst, he commanded the multitude that they should kneel down upon the ground.

14 And it came to pass that when they had knelt upon the ground, Jesus groaned within himself, and said: Father, I am troubled because of the wickedness of the people of the house of Israel.

15 And when he had said these words, he himself also knelt upon the earth; and behold he prayed unto the Father, and the things which he prayed cannot be written, and the multitude did bear record who heard him.

16 And after this manner do they bear record: The eye hath never seen, neither hath the ear heard, before, so great and marvelous things as we saw and heard Jesus speak unto the Father;

17 And no tongue can speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we both saw and heard Jesus speak; and no one can conceive of the joy which filled our souls at the time we heard him pray for us unto the Father.

The Holy Ghost

Spiritual gifts can be bestowed through the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Some are given from birth, but must be grown through the holy spirit. If we have not received them from birth then we need to ask for them and desire them.

“I am not asking you to pretend to faith you do not have. I am asking you to be true to the faith you do have.” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “‘Lord, I Believe’”, April 2013 General Conference)

“Without faith, no other gift can be given…We should seek to increase our faith, find out our gifts, and use them.” (“True to the Faith”, Chapter 22)

Satan can imitate the gifts of the spirit. The imitations are to serve themselves and not others.

Dnc 46:26

26 And all these gifts come from God, for the benefit of the children of God.

Joint Priesthood and Relief Society Meeting

If you can't trust, you can't solve problems together.

Smile at each other frequently.

A relationship needs common values. Values like morales, money, and so forth.

Thoughts from president Kimball talk on marriage and divorce.

If you are kind you are building trust.

Loved, Adored, Wanted, Needed

“As we turn to our Heavenly Father and seek His wisdom regarding the things that matter most, we learn over and over again the importance of four key relationships: with our God, with our families, with our fellowman, and with ourselves.” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Of Things That Matter Most”, October 2010 General Conference)

Amos 3:6-7 and footnotes

6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?

7 Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.

The JST of verse 6 says “...the Lord hath not known it.”.

The JST of verse 7 says “...except he revealeth…”.

In a world of confusion, how can we know what's right?

Amos 7:10-14

10 ¶ Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.

14 ¶ Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

Amos and Hosea are the only books in the Bible written to the ten tribes of Israel.

Joel 2:12-13

12 ¶ Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

Joel 3:16-17

16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.

17 Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

Dnc 1:37-38

37 Search these commandments, for they are true and faithful, and the prophecies and promises which are in them shall all be fulfilled.

38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

Dnc 21:4-6

4 Wherefore, meaning the church, thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;

5 For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.

6 For by doing these things the gates of hell shall not prevail against you; yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you, and cause the heavens to shake for your good, and his name’s glory.

Who is your closest friend outside your family? What characteristics make someone a close friend?

Dnc 84:77

77 And again I say unto you, my friends, for from henceforth I shall call you friends, it is expedient that I give unto you this commandment, that ye become even as my friends in days when I was with them, traveling to preach the gospel in my power;

John 11:5

5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

“Friends, especially my young friends, take heart. Pure Christlike love flowing from true righteousness can change the world.” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “The Cost—and Blessings—of Discipleship”, April 2014 General Conference)

Make our interest in others genuine and not just a sales pitch for the gospel.

Make the goal to not say much and mostly listen.

DnC 58

27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;

Matthew 5

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Jesus was not just someone who showed up at the last minute at the last supper and volunteered to be the Savior of the world.

The atonement perhaps included creating the world, since the atonement was for the salvation of men and men could not be saved without the earth experience.

Alma 29:9

First Speaker

“So, amid a life full of stumbling blocks and imperfection, we all are grateful for second chances.” (Elder Lynn G. Robbins, “Until Seventy Times Seven”, April 2018 General Conference)

“Stop feeling bad about someone” is the definition of forgiveness.

Mosiah 24:12-16

12 And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts.

13 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.

14 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.

15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.

16 And it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.

Matthew 18

21 ¶ Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Mosiah 24

15 And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.

Matthew 25

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Mosiah 2:17

17 And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.

Next Speaker

Matthew 22:37–40

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

“For one thing, we can, as King Benjamin taught, cease withholding our means because we see the poor as having brought their misery upon themselves. Perhaps some have created their own difficulties, but don’t the rest of us do exactly the same thing? Isn’t that why this compassionate ruler asks, “Are we not all beggars?” Don’t we all cry out for help and hope and answers to prayers? Don’t we all beg for forgiveness for mistakes we have made and troubles we have caused? Don’t we all implore that grace will compensate for our weaknesses, that mercy will triumph over justice at least in our case?”

“When, prior to His betrayal and Crucifixion, Mary anointed Jesus’s head with an expensive burial ointment, Judas Iscariot protested this extravagance and ‘murmured against her’”

“Jesus said:

“‘Why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work. …

“‘She hath done what she could.’”

“A journalist once questioned Mother Teresa of Calcutta about her hopeless task of rescuing the destitute in that city. He said that, statistically speaking, she was accomplishing absolutely nothing. This remarkable little woman shot back that her work was about love, not statistics. Notwithstanding the staggering number beyond her reach, she said she could keep the commandment to love God and her neighbor by serving those within her reach with whatever resources she had. ‘What we do is nothing but a drop in the ocean,’ she would say on another occasion. ‘But if we didn’t do it, the ocean would be one drop less [than it is].’ Soberly, the journalist concluded that Christianity is obviously not a statistical endeavor. He reasoned that if there would be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over the ninety and nine who need no repentance, then apparently God is not overly preoccupied with percentages.”

Gospel Principles - Lesson 19

Ways we sin

-Ignorance

-Wilful disobedience

-Not doing something we know we should

Ecclesiastes 7:21

21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:

1 John 1

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

James 4:17

17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Luke 22:43-44

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Steps of repentance

-Recognize

-Remorse

-Forsake

-Confess

-Restitution

-Forgive others

“This scripture is most precise. First, one repents. Having gained that ground he then must live the commandments of the Lord to retain his vantage point. This is necessary to secure complete forgiveness.” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Spencer W. Kimball, Chapter 4: The Miracle of Forgiveness)

Elders Quorum

“Have we overlooked the fact that the scriptures, ancient and modern, hold out the promise to all those who are faithful and true to every covenant and obligation which the gospel places upon them that the reward will be that they shall become gods? Jesus taught this doctrine to the Jews. It is interwoven throughout all of our Standard Works. The promise has been made to all who are just and true, that they shall become sons and daughters of God, members of his household, (Ephesians 3: 14-15) “joint heirs with Jesus Christ,” (Romans 8:17) and entitled to the fulness of exaltation.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, vol. 2 (1958), 142.)

“The temple endowment, as administered in modern temples, comprises instruction relating to the significance and sequence of past dispensations, and the importance of the present as the greatest and grandest era in human history. This course of instruction includes a recital of the most prominent events of the creative period, the condition of our first parents in the Garden of Eden, their disobedience and consequent expulsion from that blissful abode, their condition in the lone and dreary world when doomed to live by labor and sweat, the plan of redemption by which the great transgression may be atoned, the period of the great apostasy, the restoration of the gospel with all its ancient powers and privileges, the absolute and indispensable conditions of personal purity and devotion to the right in present life, and a strict compliance with gospel requirements…” (Elder James E Talmage, The House of the Lord, 1912 ed., p. 99).

“The ordinances of salvation and exaltation administered in the Lord’s restored Church are far more than rituals or symbolic performances. Rather, they constitute authorized channels through which the blessings and powers of heaven can flow into our individual lives.” (Elder David A. Bednar, “Always Retain a Remission of Your Sins”, April 2016 General Conference)

Testimony Meeting

Remember the poor.

We are all of a divine nature.

Use technology to make you stronger, but don’t let it be a distraction and make you weaker.

We cannot be casual without efforts with our spirit and testimony.

We are as valuable to God as anyone in biblical times.

When a priesthood blessing is given, we need to remember to give a blessing and not just council or comfort.

Don’t ask “Why me?” - Ask, “What am I supposed to learn?”.

Job 1, 2, 13

Job 1:21

21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

Job 2:9-10

9 ¶ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Job 19:25 - Jesus in the Old Testament

25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

Integrity means to be whole, like an integer is a whole number. Like a ship that stays afloat and does not take on water has integrity. Like a bowl that holds water has integrity.

If we have integrity while we serve it becomes like muscle memory and we can do it without thinking mucho.

Mentally act in service while we act physically.

Elders Quorum

“Not long ago, I attended a sacrament meeting in which a new baby was to be given a name and a father’s blessing. The young father held his precious infant in his arms, gave her a name, and then offered a beautiful prayer. But he did not give that child a blessing. That sweet baby girl got a name but no blessing! That dear elder did not know the difference between a prayer and a priesthood blessing. With his priesthood authority and power, he could have blessed his infant, but he did not. I thought, ‘What a missed opportunity!’”

Asking that someone be blessed is a prayer. Giving a priesthood blessing is direct.

Dnc 132:47

47 And again, verily I say, whomsoever you bless I will bless, and whomsoever you curse I will curse, saith the Lord; for I, the Lord, am thy God.
