Church Services This Week at Oak Ridge Ward Layton North Stake Layton Utah 19 Sept 2021

Sacrament Service

First Speaker

They pulled things for their talk from Elder Uchtdorf’s talk, “God among Us”.

Matthew 22:37-39

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Next Speaker

They pulled things from their talk from President Oaks talk, “Defending Our Divinely Inspired Constitution”.

The constitution is a living document.  It is living because it is used to keep our country alive and functioning.  It is also living because it is able to evolve and grow.

Sunday School

We expect certain things. When they do not happen, how do we respond? Patience? Anger? Faith? Loss of faith.

Doctrine and Covenants 105:6

6 And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things which they suffer.

Galatians 6:7-9

7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

“In a most literal way, the physical and spiritual challenges of Zion’s Camp constituted a sifting of the wheat from the tares (see Matthew 13:25, 29–30; D&C 101:65), a dividing of the sheep from the goats (see Matthew 25:32–33), a separating of the spiritually strong from the weak. Thus, each man and woman who enlisted in the army of the Lord faced and answered the penetrating question of ‘Who’s on the Lord’s side?’”

“How did the testing and sifting that occurred in the lives of the Zion’s Camp participants serve as a preparation? Interestingly, eight of the brethren called into the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1835, as well as all of the Seventies called at that same time, were veterans of Zion’s Camp.” (Elder David A Bednar, “On the Lord’s Side: Lessons from Zion’s Camp”, Ensign July 2017)

Ward Conference

First Speaker

Doctrine and Covenants 19:16-19

16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent;

17 But if they would not repent they must suffer even as I;

18 Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—

19 Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men.

John 3:16
16 ¶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The worth of something is what someone is willing to pay for it.  Heavenly Father was willing to give his Son to be abused and killed for us.

Next Speaker

"The Lord is intent on your personal growth and development. That progress is accelerated when you willingly allow Him to lead you through every growth experience you encounter, whether initially it be to your individual liking or not. When you trust in the Lord, when you are willing to let your heart and your mind be centered in His will, when you ask to be led by the Spirit to do His will, you are assured of the greatest happiness along the way and the most fulfilling attainment from this mortal experience. If you question everything you are asked to do, or dig in your heels at every unpleasant challenge, you make it harder for the Lord to bless you....

"Find the compensatory blessings in your life when, in the wisdom of the Lord, He deprives you of something you very much want. To the sightless or hearing impaired, He sharpens the other senses. To the ill, He gives patience, understanding, and increased appreciation for others' kindness. With the loss of a dear one, He deepens the bonds of love, enriches memories, and kindles hope in a future reunion. You will discover compensatory blessings when you willingly accept the will of the Lord and exercise faith in Him." ( Richard G. Scott, "Finding Joy in Life," Ensign, May 1996, pp. 24-26)

The speaker recommended the book, “Defender of the Faith” by Trumen Madsen.

What happens to us is not as important as how we react to what happens to us.

How we turn out has more to do with our experience in the preexistence than the environment we were raised in during our youth in this life.

Elders Quorum

Lesson was based on the talk "Bishops—Shepherds over the Lord’s Flock" By Elder Quentin L. Cook.  Here is the link to the talk https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2021/04/31cook?lang=eng

1 Peter 2:25

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

"The bishop helped the parents understand that striving to be a disciple of Jesus Christ was more important than exactly how and when family chores were accomplished."

Teacher Council

There were some questions about using silence.

Here is a 3 minute thought from Elder Bednar on using silence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wZypEC1tsg

The “Teaching in the Savior’s Way manual said this:

"Don’t Be Afraid of Silence

“Good questions take time to answer. They require pondering, searching, and inspiration. The time you spend waiting for answers to a question can be a sacred time of pondering. Avoid the temptation to end this time too soon by answering your own question or moving on to something else. Tell learners that you will give them time to ponder before they answer."
