Church Services This Week at Oak Ridge Ward Layton North Stake Layton Utah 14 August 2016

Stake Priesthood Meeting
A counselor in the stake presidency spoke to us.
Doctrine and Covenants 84:34
34 They become the sons of Moses and of Aaron and the seed of Abraham, and the church and kingdom, and the elect of God.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:38
38 And he that receiveth my Father receiveth my Father's Kingdom; therefore all that my Father hath shall be given unto him.

Inventory with our wives and grown children how we are doing at spending time each week to prepare our children for the onslaught the adversary is preparing.

The other counselor in the stake presidency spoke to us.

We need to move from priesthood authority to priesthood power.

I fear that there are too many priesthood bearers who have done little or nothing to develop their ability to access the powers of heaven. I worry about all who are impure in their thoughts, feelings, or actions or who demean their wives or children, thereby cutting off priesthood power.“ (President Russell M Nelson,  The Price of Priesthood Power, April 2016 General Conference)

Pride turns off priesthood power. Humility turns it back on.

What is the price to develop such priesthood power? The Savior’s senior Apostle, Peter—that same Peter who with James and John conferred the Melchizedek Priesthood upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery8—declared qualities we should seek to ‘be partakers of the divine nature.’9 “ (President Russell M Nelson,  The Price of Priesthood Power, April 2016 General Conference)

We should be thoughtful and careful.

The stake president spoke to us.

2 Nephi 28:19-21
19 For the kingdom of the devil must shake, and they which belong to it must needs be stirred up unto repentance, or the devil will grasp them with his everlasting chains, and they be stirred up to anger, and perish;
20 For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good.
21 And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.

As we seriously study we will better understand priesthood power

Doctrine and Covenants 84:33
33 For whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods of which I have spoken, and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.

Go nowhere that your priesthood can't go with you.

The tough part of that reality, however, is that for Him to give you that increased power you must go in service and faith to your outer limits. “ (President Henry B Eyring, O Ye That Embark, October 2008 General Conference)

Sacrament Service
The youth speaker spoke on agency and accountability.

We can choose what we want to do, but we cannot choose the consequences of our choices.

Agency and accountability go hand in hand.  Many glory in being able to make their own choices, but many also try very hard to remove the consequences of those choices.

He never said it would be easy, only that it would be worth it.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

A member of the stake young men presidency spoke to us.

The beauty of the gospel is that it is not subjective. Our standard is always the same.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:18-21
 18 Therefore, it must needs be sanctified from all unrighteousness, that it may be prepared for the celestial glory;
 19 For after it hath filled the measure of its creation, it shall be crowned with glory, even with the presence of God the Father;
20 That bodies who are of the celestial kingdom may possess it forever and ever; for, for this intent was it made and created, and for this intent are they sanctified.
21 And they who are not sanctified through the law which I have given unto you, even the law of Christ, must inherit another kingdom, even that of a terrestrial kingdom, or that of a telestial kingdom.

Moses 1:39
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

I hate to just attribute a quote to a person without knowing where they stated it, but the speaker attributed the next one to Elder Holland and I seem to remember him saying it as well.  I just don’t know where, so if anyone has a link to the talk he gave it in, I will cite it here.

The future of this world has long been declared; the final outcome between good and evil is already known. There is absolutely no question as to who wins because the victory has already been posted on the scoreboard. The only really strange thing in all of this is that we are still down here on the field trying to decide which team’s jersey we want to wear!”

A stake high councilor spoke to us.

Video - “You Can't Close My Heart “

On June 14, 1989, the government of Ghana banned all activities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the country. Foreign missionaries were sent home, meetinghouses were locked, and Church members were forced to keep a low profile during this time, which came to be known as the ‘freeze.’”
“The Church authorized members to hold meetings in their homes. Sundays were spent singing hymns, reading scriptures, and partaking of the sacrament in families and small groups.”
“Active and dedicated home and visiting teachers also played an essential role in holding the Ghanaian members of the Church together during the freeze. Newer converts remained in contact with fellow worshippers thanks to these important visits. Members began to realize that though the physical presence of the Church was missing, they were still enjoying the blessings of living the gospel.”

Doctrine and Covenants 93:19
19 I give unto you these sayings that you may understand and know how to worship, and know what you worship, that you may come unto the Father in my name, and in due time receive of his fulness.

“In other words, true and perfect worship consists in following in the steps of the Son of God; it consists in keeping the commandments and obeying the will of the Father to that degree that we advance from grace to grace until we are glorified in Christ as he is in his Father. It is far more than prayer and sermon and song. It is living and doing and obeying. It is emulating the life of the great Exemplar.”
...
“To worship the Lord is to follow after him, to seek his face, to believe his doctrine, and to think his thoughts.

“It is to walk in his paths, to be baptized as Christ was, to preach that gospel of the kingdom which fell from his lips, and to heal the sick and raise the dead as he did.” (Bruce R McConkie, “How To Worship”, General Conference October 1971)

Sunday School
Book of Mormon lesson 28
“The great enemy of charity is pride. Pride is one of the biggest reasons marriages and families struggle. Pride is short-tempered, unkind, and envious. Pride exaggerates its own strength and ignores the virtues of others. Pride is selfish and easily provoked. Pride assumes evil intent where there is none and hides its own weaknesses behind clever excuses. Pride is cynical, pessimistic, angry, and impatient. Indeed, if charity is the pure love of Christ, then pride is the defining characteristic of Satan.” (President Dieter F Uchtdorf, “In Praise Those Who Save”, April 2016 General Conference)

Drinking water on the surface is not satisfying. The taste is bland. There are no calories. Yet, when we really drink it in we feel how good it is deeply, even though at first look there is nothing appealing over other drinks.

Take up “love another “ as our daily motto.

The speaker shared part of a sermon from a guy named Peter Marshall.  Peter talked about a man that worked to keep a stream in the mount free of debris and yuck, so they had clear water in the valley.  The people in the valley decided they didn’t need him to do that, so they did it another way and before long the water wasn’t clean and pure and people and animals were getting sick.  He then stated, “Do not think me fanciful, too imaginative or too extravagant in my language when I say that I think of women, and particularly of our mothers, as Keepers of the Springs.” (Peter Marshall, “Keepers of the Springs”)

Enmity means deep bitterness and hatred.

Satan gives mothers stress and depression, which gets in the way of them fixing this earth through nurturing people.

Live your life to the fullness of your creation.

Nurturing in and of itself is more important in the development of a child than is any particular method or technique of child rearing. It hardly needs saying that nurturing is best carried out in a stable, safe family context....
A mother's nurturing love arouses in children, from their earliest days on earth, an awakening of the memories of love and goodness they experienced in their premortal existence. Because our mothers love us, we learn, or, more accurately, remember, that God also loves us. President Thomas S. Monson said, "One cannot forget mother and remember God. One cannot remember mother and forget God. Why? Because these two sacred persons, God and mother, partners in creation, in love, in sacrifice, in service, are as one" (Elder M Russell Ballard, "Behold Thy Mother,"Ensign, April 1998, 6)

2 Peter 1:2-3
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Heavenly Father generously shares a portion of His divinity within us. That divine nature comes as a gift from Him with a love that only a parent can feel.

“We come to this earth to nurture and discover the seeds of divine nature that are within us.” (Rosemary M Wixom, Discovering the Divinity Within, October 2015 General Conference Women’s Session)
This is a charitable Society, and according to your natures; it is natural for females to have feelings of charity and benevolence. You are now placed in a situation in which you can act according to those sympathies which God has planted in your bosoms.” (History of the Church, 4:605; from a discourse given by Joseph Smith on Apr. 28, 1842, in Nauvoo, Illinois; reported by Eliza R. Snow.)

Jesus was nailed to the cross during the forenoon of that fateful Friday, probably between nine and ten o’clock.u At noontide the light of the sun was obscured, and black darkness spread over the whole land. The terrifying gloom continued for a period of three hours. This remarkable phenomenon has received no satisfactory explanation from science. It could not have been due to a solar eclipse, as has been suggested in ignorance, for the time was that of full moon; indeed the Passover season was determined by the first occurrence of full moon after the spring equinox. The darkness was brought about by miraculous operation of natural laws directed by divine power. It was a fitting sign of the earth’s deep mourning over the impending death of her Creator.v Of the mortal agony through which the Lord passed while upon the cross the Gospel-scribes are reverently reticent.“ (James E Talmage, “Jesus the Christ”)

Moses 2:27
27 And I, God, created man in mine own image, in the image of mine Only Begotten created I him; male and female created I them.

When the Lord refers to man it is plural, meaning male and female.

“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” -  George Washington

The first account of King Benjamin was not about being a king, but about teaching his sons.

How do we teach our children the love of the scriptures?
-read them with them
-share with them your favorite scriptures
-teach using the scriptures
-use scriptures as bedtime stories

True leadership is service.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Howard W Hunter chapter 16
Marriage
Many of you … worry about courtship, marriage, and starting a family. You probably will not find the name of your future spouse in Nephi’s vision or the book of Revelation; you probably will not be told it by an angel or even by your bishop. Some things you must work out for yourself. Have faith and be obedient, and blessings will come. Try to be patient. Try not to let what you don’t have blind you to that which you do have. If you worry too much about marriage, it can canker the very possibility of it. Live fully and faithfully as one person before having undue anxiety about living as two.

[Marriage] … is a learned behavior. Our conscious effort, not instinct, determines the success. The motivating force stems from kindness, true affection, and consideration for each other’s happiness and welfare.

“The words none else eliminate everyone and everything. The spouse then becomes pre-eminent in the life of the husband or wife and neither social life nor occupational life nor political life nor any other interest nor person nor thing shall ever take precedence over the companion spouse” (The Miracle of Forgiveness, Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1969, p. 250).

A sister that just returned from a summer performing mission to Nauvoo, IL spoke to us.

Moses 7:69
69 And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion; and it came to pass that Zion was not, for God received it up into his own bosom; and from thence went forth the saying, Zion is Fled.

The sister that served in Nauvoo expressed that she was concerned that she wasn't crying as she portrayed these characters from church history. She said these were such hard trials and she didn't know why it wasn't making her cry. She spoke to another missionary and was told that the missionary felt that the early Saints were not about tears. She said they were about strength and determination.

She said one of the lines from one of the shows was,  "west is a direction and not a destination." .They were told to travel west,  but did not know where they were going to stop.  We often have trials or inspiration which we do not know where or when it will end. We may not know where we will end up.

A high councilman spoke to us. His son was in a car crash this weekend and broke his neck and back and had a severe head injury. We prayed often at youth conference for him.

At first they thought they were going to have a funeral this weekend. Then he stabilized, but they thought he would be paralyzed.

The hospital called before our sacrament service and they said the son had woke up and finally knew where he was.  He was asking where his dad was.  They examined him again and said that his neck is still broken, but he is not paralyzed and should be fine.

My teaching partner gave a lesson on the importance of marriage.

He asked the question “How would you teach The Family.: A Proclamation to the World to a non member?”.

He split the class into two and had one talk about family and one talk about marriage.

Pay attention when the elderly talk. We can learn from their triumphs as well as from their mistakes.

Stay active when you are young to enjoy a good level of mental and physical activity as we age.

Parents should find ways to connect their parents with their children. It is good for the grandparents, but also for the child.  If we wait for grandchildren to be engaged with being interested in their grandparents life and history the grandparents may be gone.

What are some ways we can show compassion?

“We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.” (Charles R. Swindoll)

But the pioneers did not work only because they had to, he said. “In the process, their labors enlarged their character and broadened their understanding. Work diminished their natural tendencies toward self-love and magnified their understanding of their divine nature. It heightened their compassion for others. In the labors of each day, they discovered and solidified an inner strength and profound spiritual depth.” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, All Is Well, July 13, 2014, Pioneer Days Celebration in Ogden, Utah)

"Work is a blessing from God. It is a fundamental principle of salvation, both spiritual and temporal." (J Richard Clarke, The Value of Work, April 1982 General Conference)

Moses 4:23
23 And unto Adam, I, the Lord God, said: Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the fruit of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying—Thou shalt not eat of it, cursed shall be the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

"1. As Latter-day Saints, if we would be true to our religion, we must perform high-quality work. It is a matter of integrity. Every piece of work we do is a portrait of the one who produced it. We are increasingly concerned with the diminishing quality of work in our society. On every hand we see shoddy workmanship for which full compensation is expected, whether the product meets acceptable standards or not. We must be motivated by a higher ideal than simply meeting the artificial standard of a society which has allowed inferior performance to be acceptable. That is not the Mormon ethic. In times of unemployment, Latter-day Saints who practice the work principles of our religion should be in great demand.

“Let us give full, honest effort to our jobs as though we owned the enterprise. In a very real sense, each of us is in business for ourselves, no matter who pays us. Be honest with your employer. Make sure that “the laborer is worthy of his hire.” (D&C 84:79.) Our employers should get the best we have in us, not just enough to get by or to meet common standards. Each of us should set a personal standard based upon our ability. Let us exemplify the old pioneer motto: A Full Day’s Work for a Full Day’s Pay."
“ Look to your present job as a stepping-stone along your career path. Take time to think. The dimensions of most jobs are constrained only by the mind of the uncreative worker. I like what one businessman counseled: ‘If at first you do succeed, try something harder!’”
“To teach our children to work is a primary duty of parenthood.”
“Fortunate is the young man or woman who has learned how to work. Wise is the parent who requires children to learn responsibility and to meet acceptable performance standards.” (J Richard Clarke, The Value of Work, April 1982 General Conference)

Sunday School
My teaching partner’s lesson on sacrament meeting.

“How we dress is an important indicator of our attitude and preparation for any activity in which we will engage. If we are going swimming or hiking or playing on the beach, our clothing, including our footwear, will indicate this. The same should be true of how we dress when we are to participate in the ordinance of the sacrament. It is like going to the temple. Our manner of dress indicates the degree to which we understand and honor the ordinance in which we will participate.

"During sacrament meeting—and especially during the sacrament service—we should concentrate on worship and refrain from all other activities, especially from behavior that could interfere with the worship of others. Even a person who slips into quiet slumber does not interfere with others. Sacrament meeting is not a time for reading books or magazines. Young people, it is not a time for whispered conversations on cell phones or for texting persons at other locations. When we partake of the sacrament, we make a sacred covenant that we will always remember the Savior. How sad to see persons obviously violating that covenant in the very meeting where they are making it.” (Elder Dallin H Oaks, Sacrament Meeting and the Sacrament, October 2008 General Conference)

5-17-2015
General Session of Stake Conference
When was the last time you knelt in prayer and asked your Father in Heaven what he would like you to understand in your patriarchal blessing?

"I express my utmost confidence in your abilities. You have the Savior of the world on your side. If you seek His help and follow His directions, how can you fail?" (Bishop Gary E Stevenson, “Your Four Minutes”, April 2014 General Conference)

The Layton stakes are being shifted from the Ogden temple district to the Bountiful temple district.

5-16-2015
Adult session of Stake Conference
Couple and Family Councils - Schedule a time to talk rather than just jumping in and starting to talk. This respects each other's time and gives everyone time to prepare to have an intelligent discussion.

Develop a unity as parents before sitting down with the kids. Do not let the kids play one parent against each other.

When it is scheduled then there is less chance get an intense emotional response.

Perhaps give the topic you want to talk about in advance so family members have time to collect their thoughts and pray.

Doctrine and Covenants 50:10-12
10 And now come, saith the Lord, by the Spirit, unto the elders of his church, and let us reason together, that ye may understand;
11 Let us reason even as a man reasoneth one with another face to face.
12 Now, when a man reasoneth he is understood of man, because he reasoneth as a man; even so will I, the Lord, reason with you that you may understand.
How do we give the sabbath and our sacrament meetings back to the Savior?

How will you "always remember him"?

Isaiah 58:13-14
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

What we do on the sabbath is a sign between each of us and God as to our commitment.

Doing Your Duty
One of the speakers talked about his grandfather's and home teachers' example after his parents divorced.

"Priesthood is the means whereby the Lord acts through men to save souls." - The Powers of Heaven,  David A. Bednar, April 2012 General Conference

The speaker talked of a story where racing greyhounds were trained so much to chase a mechanical rabbit so much that when a real rabbit came onto the track they ignored it.

How trained do we get on chasing things that when real, important things cross our path that we don't attend to them.

“We chase mechanical rabbits, too.
“We chase paychecks, and don’t give a second look to the glint of the rising sun on a snow-topped peak.
“We chase our way through the appointments of a crowded desk calendar, and fail to take time to chat with the next-door neighbor or to drop in on a sick friend.
“We chase social pleasures on a glittering noisy treadmill—and ignore the privilege of a quiet hour telling bedtime stories to an innocent-eyed child.
“We chase prestige and wealth, and don’t recognize the real opportunities for joy that cross our paths. …”
The world is full of foolish schemes. They contravene and hinder the purposes of the Lord. Some seek to change the God-given roles of the sexes. Some invite mothers to leave the home to work. Others entice fathers to find recreation away from their families. These questionable practices weaken the home!

“Some fathers provide a good house, clothing, cars, and food, and forget what real fatherhood is. Fatherhood is a relationship of love and understanding. It is strength and manliness and honor. It is power and action. It is counsel and instruction. Fatherhood is to be one with your own. It is authority and example.” (A Theodore Tuttle, The Things That Matter Most, Ensign December 1971)

“The father is the protector of the home. He guards it against the intrusion of evil from without. Formerly he protected his home with weapons and shuttered windows. Today the task is more complex. Barred doors and windows protect only against the intrusion of a corporeal creature. It is not an easy thing to protect one’s family against intrusions of evil into the minds and spirits of family members. These influences can and do flow freely into the home. Satan can subtly beguile the children of men in ways we have already mentioned in this conference. He need not break down the door.

“Fathers, you will have to live close to the Lord. Develop a sensitivity to the impressions of the Spirit.

“There is yet another intrusion into the home that needs to be mentioned. It is an unwise father who carries to his family his daily business cares. They disturb the peace existing there. He should leave his worries at the office and enter his home with the spirit of peace in his heart and with the love of God burning within him. If there is friction, his presence should soothe it. If there is turmoil, he should resolve it.” (A Theodore Tuttle, The Role of Fathers, October 1973 General Conference)

By the way you love her mother, you will teach your daughter about tenderness, loyalty, respect, compassion, and devotion. She will learn from your example what to expect from young men and what qualities to seek in a future spouse. You can show your daughter by the way you love and honor your wife that she should never settle for less. Your example will teach your daughter to value womanhood. You are showing her that she is a daughter of our Heavenly Father, who loves her.” (Elaine S. Dalton, Love Her Mother, October 2011 General Conference)

Even when we can't bring a lot of religion into our professional environment we can be an example of righteousness.

Alma 38:12
12 Use boldness, but not overbearance; and also see that ye bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love; see that ye refrain from idleness.

Duty is what others expect of you, but more importantly it is what you expect of yourself.

"Only if a citizen is allowed to make decisions of conscience and lifestyle free from state control or coercion can he be held totally accountable for his actions."

"If men and women of character fail to participate in the political decisions that shape their lives, others with more selfish motives will inevitably rush in to fill the void."

Sunday School
John the Baptist was to prepare the way for the Savior and then testify of the Savior.

The Jews perhaps needed to be eased into the idea of the Christ. They had different ideas of what the Messiah was going to be.

For a time John and Jesus both had their own sets of followers. Perhaps John had more of a new investigator class or a gospel principles class. Perhaps he was finding people to teach, teaching them very basic doctrines, and baptizing them.

After John was killed was there a missionary program that still taught people and prepared them for the deeper doctrines of Christ?   It is likely not possible that Christ, in his human form, could find all the people that were to be taught and teach them all of the basics while still setting up his church and teaching all of the advanced doctrines he had for the people.

John was in the wilderness to protect him from Herod's decree to kill all children under 2.  His parents had taken him to the wilderness to hide him and that is where he was raised.

John preached repentance because he was baptizing and you had to repent first.

Also,  to prepare the way of the Lord people's hearts need to be softened through repentance to accept Him.

Priesthood leaders are necessary to focus on what the people don't understand. Often we do not know that we are off track and it is throwing the rest of our lives off track.   Some of what John was telling the people were things they didn't understand was wrong and they needed to raise their life to a higher level in preparation for the higher law the Savior was bringing.

In order to truly repent we must have a mighty change of heart and not just not doing the sin.

"Learning, pondering, searching, and memorizing scriptures is like filling a filing cabinet with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime, anywhere in the world." ()

Proverbs 3:5
5 ¶Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Agency -  Teachings of Presidents of the Church:  Ezra Taft Benson Chapter 3, Freedom of Choice, an Eternal Principle
"[Ezra] saw that when he made the choice to work hard, local farmers hired him to thin their beets and pitch their hay."

Galatians 6:7 - “applies to spiritual pursuits as well as physical labor.”
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

“[President Benson] spoke of agency as the ability to ‘make important decisions that will have bearing on our salvation’ and that will ‘affect our happiness in eternity.’”

“The premortal Jesus Christ followed Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation, which preserved our freedom of choice.”

“Lucifer is the enemy of all righteousness and seeks the misery of all mankind.”

“The central issue in that premortal council was: Shall the children of God have untrammeled agency to choose the course they should follow, whether good or evil, or shall they be coerced and forced to be obedient? Christ and all who followed Him stood for the former proposition—freedom of choice; Satan stood for the latter—coercion and force.”

Revelation 12:7-9
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

“The war that began in heaven over this issue is not yet over. The conflict continues on the battlefield of mortality.”
