Chapter 1, Teachings of Presidents of the Church, Howard W Hunter, “Following the Master”
“Please remember this one thing. If our lives and our faith are centered upon Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong. On the other hand, if our lives are not centered on the Savior and his teachings, no other success can ever be permanently right” (“‘Fear Not, Little Flock,’” 1988–89 Devotional and Fireside Speeches, Provo: Brigham Young University Press, 1989, p. 112).

The Book of Mormon was written for our day specifically and for the gathering of Israel.
Parents and teachers set up rules to keep kids safe. Heavenly Father sets up commandments to keep us safe. Just like kids feel restricted sometimes and don't understand why those rules exist, so do we sometimes find the commandments restrictive and we don't understand the importance. Just like a parent or teacher who have seen bad things happen and made the rules to prevent those bad things, so has father seen bad things happen and has given commandments to prevent those bad things.
Alma 42:25
25 What, do ye suppose that mercy can rob justice? I say unto you, Nay; not one whit. If so, God would cease to be God.
