DnC 1:38

38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

First Speaker

The speaker shared how he was in boot camp shortly after he joined the Church.  He said that there were a handful of members in his group.  They met together for an impromptu church meeting when the others were dismissed to their meetings.  They sang, “We Thank Thee, O god, For a Prophet”.  He said that really worked on his testimony in that tiny group.

Joint Meeting

You will have to get revelation for yourself.  You can’t rely on someone else for your testimony.

“Now a word to the parents: your role is essential. Please build strong relationships with your children and youth. Leaders at church can help, but these are your children. No one can have a greater influence on their success than you. Give them love and encouragement and counsel.” (President Russell M. Nelson, Supporting Children and Youth: A Broadcast for Parents and Leaders)

“The vision of the Personal Development: Youth Guidebook is ‘to strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ and help you and your family progress along the covenant path as you meet life’s challenges’ (“What Is Children and Youth?” ChurchofJesusChrist.org).” (2023 Seminary Student Manual, Luke 2:40-52)

Luke 2:52

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

"Serve with love. Loving service to those who have lost their way or who are wounded in spirit opens your heart to personal revelation." - President Nelson

First Speaker

Our challenges can be a load heavy enough to give us traction.

Some of the things we go through are to help strengthen us or to help us to be capable of helping others.

Next Speaker

DnC 88

119 Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;

DnC 42:61

61 If thou shalt ask, thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge, that thou mayest know the mysteries and peaceable things—that which bringeth joy, that which bringeth life eternal.

DnC 88

118 And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.

Elders Quorum

Lesson taken from "Exercising Our Spiritual Muscles" By Elder Juan Pablo Villar.

We are so busy, but we need to take time to ponder.

We don't have to worry about specifically bear testimony or teach people doctrine all the time. We just need to be a solid friend and teach it to people that way. Sharing each other's lives and struggles will allow the rest to often fall into place.

2 Nephi 25:26

26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

First Speaker

Someone who recent returned from a mission spoke to us.

To sow is to plant by scattering across the earth.

DnC 4

1 Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men

Matthew 6

24 ¶ No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Everything that we do is planting seeds, both good and bad.  Are we planting weeds sometimes?

One of the things we are most selfish with is our time.

Next Speaker

To have a successful garden, you have to plan ahead.

“A wise Cherokee, one of the indigenous tribes in the United States, told his grandson a parable about life. ‘Inside me there is a terrible fight between two wolves,” the grandfather said. “One is evil: full of anger and envy, self-pity and sorrow, greed and lies. The other is good: full of kindness and compassion, humility and truth, love and joy. That fight is going on inside each of us.’

“‘Which wolf will win?’ the grandson asked.

“‘The one you feed,’ the grandfather wisely answered.” (President Dallin H. Oaks, “Choices”, September 2021 For the Strength of Youth)

“Love unfeigned” - What does it mean to feign?

DnC 121

41 No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;

42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile—

43 Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy;

The Oxford Dictionary defines feign as “to pretend to be affected by (a feeling, state, or injury).

We can choose our actions, but not the consequences of those actions.  Consequences = outcome.

Sunday School

2 Corinthians 3

6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

The why is the doctrine. The how are programs and policies.

Whether you believe or not, you will still have the consequences, good or bad, of obeying or disobeying.

Repentance is to cleanse us from sin, but is it also a way for us to develop gifts of the spirit.

Do we hide our struggles and make it hard for others to mourn with us to be able to mourn with those that mourn?

Work and Self Reliance

DnC 58:26-27

26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.

27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;

We need to work hard to have a testimony.

Next Speaker

John 17:15

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

“The place to cure most of the ills of society is in the homes of the people. Building our homes as fortresses of righteousness for protection from the world takes constant labor and diligence. Membership in the Church is no guarantee of a strong, happy family. Often parents feel overwhelmed. Many must accomplish the whole job single-handedly while bearing all of the emotional pain of divorce. The Lord has provided a plan that will help us to be successful in meeting every challenge that may confront us.” (Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, “Spiritually Strong Homes and Families”, April 1993 General Conference)

Helaman 5:12

12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

Mosiah 4:14-15
14 And ye will not suffer your children that they go hungry, or naked; neither will ye suffer that they transgress the laws of God, and fight and quarrel one with another, and serve the devil, who is the master of sin, or who is the evil spirit which hath been spoken of by our fathers, he being an enemy to all righteousness.

15 But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another.

“A personal word of counsel to parents: Teach your children to pray, to rely on the Lord for guidance, and to express appreciation for their blessings. Children learn from you to distinguish between right and wrong. They learn that lying, cheating, stealing, or coveting possessions of others is wrong. Help them to learn to keep the Sabbath day holy and to pay their tithing. Teach them to learn and obey the commandments of God. Teach your young children to work, and teach them that honest labor develops dignity and self-respect. Help them to find pleasure in work and to feel the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.” (Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, “Spiritually Strong Homes and Families”, April 1993 General Conference)

“In addition to your example of growing in faith, your praying as a family can play a crucial part in making home a sacred place. One person is usually chosen as voice to pray for the family. When the prayer is clearly to God in behalf of the people kneeling and listening, faith grows in all of them. They can feel expressions of love for Heavenly Father and for the Savior. And when the person who prays mentions those who are kneeling in that circle who are in need, all can feel love for them and for each member of the family.

“Even when family members are not living in the home, prayer can build bonds of love. Prayer in the family can reach across the world. More than once I have learned that a family member far away was praying at the same moment for the same thing as I was. For me, the old saying ‘The family that prays together stays together’ could be expanded to ‘The family that prays together is together, even when they are far apart.’” (President Henry B. Eyring, “A Home Where the Spirit of the Lord Dwells”, April 2019 General Conference)

Next Speaker

Foster an attitude of love for spiritual things.

2 Nephi 25

23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

We are not saved just at the end of our work in life.  We are saved everyday as we pull being yoked to Christ.  As we pull, He pulls and gives us extra strength to do more than we could do on our own.  At the same time, not doing everything for us, so that our spiritual muscles can grow.

When teaching “Come, Follow Me”, it is not a lecture.  It should be an discussion.

Mosiah 3:19

19 For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

“The grand objective of the Savior’s gospel was summarized succinctly by President David O. McKay (1873–1970): “The purpose of the gospel is … to make bad men good and good men better, and to change human nature.”1 Thus, the journey of mortality is to progress from bad to good to better and to experience the mighty change of heart—to have our fallen natures changed (see Mosiah 5:2).” (Elder David A. Bednar, “The Atonement and the Journey of Mortality”, From a devotional address given at Brigham Young University on October 23, 2001. For the full text in English, visit speeches.byu.edu)

Alma 7

12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.

Alma 32:27

27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

“Fathers and mothers, your foremost responsibility is your family. By working together you can have the kind of home the Lord expects you to have. By showing love and consideration for one another and for your children, you can build a reservoir of spiritual strength that will never run dry.” (President Spencer W. Kimball, Ensign, June 1975, 5)

“A home is much more than a house built of lumber, brick, or stone. A home is made of love, sacrifice, and respect. We are responsible for the homes we build. We must build wisely, for eternity is not a short voyage. There will be calm and wind, sunlight and shadows, joy and sorrow. But if we really try, our home can be a bit of heaven here on earth. The thoughts we think, the deeds we do, the lives we live not only influence the success of our earthly journey, they also mark the way to our eternal goals.” (President Thomas S. Monson, “Heavenly Homes, Forever Families”, Ensign June 2006)

Elders Quorum

"I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant's faithful one hundred percent." (Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr. Seuss)

“My young friends, I have been asked what I mean by word of honor. I will tell you. Place me behind prison walls—walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground—there is a possibility that in some way or another I may be able to escape. But stand me on that floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I’d die first!” (In Alma P. Burton, Karl G. Maeser: Mormon Educator (1953), 71; see also Dallin H. Oaks, “Be Honest in All Behavior” (Brigham Young University devotional, Jan. 30, 1973), 4, speeches.byu.edu.)

“Keeping your promises will take unshakable faith that the Lord called them. Keeping those promises will also bring eternal happiness. Not keeping them will bring sorrow to you and to those you love—and even losses beyond your power to imagine.” (President Henry B. Eyring, “The Power of Sustaining Faith”, April 2019 General Conference)

Testimonies

We are not put on this earth to walk alone.

Most of us are only allowed to see small glimpses of the mysteries of God and the mysteries of what is ahead of us in life.

Live so that we can act in God’s name with confidence.

We have a member of the Godhead that attends us every day if we allow him to do so.  That member is the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 2:14-16

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:13

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Alma 13:28

28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;

1 Corinthians 12:4-7

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

Elder Marvin J. Ashton shared these examples of what he called “less-conspicuous gifts” of the Spirit: “The gift of asking; the gift of listening; the gift of hearing and using a still, small voice; the gift of being able to weep; the gift of avoiding contention; the gift of being agreeable; the gift of avoiding vain repetition; the gift of seeking that which is righteous; the gift of not passing judgment; the gift of looking to God for guidance; the gift of being a disciple; the gift of caring for others; the gift of being able to ponder; the gift of offering prayer; the gift of bearing a mighty testimony; and the gift of receiving the Holy Ghost” (“There Are Many Gifts,” Ensign, Nov. 1987, 20).

1 Corinthians 12:14-20

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

DnC 46:8-10, 26

8 Wherefore, beware lest ye are deceived; and that ye may not be deceived seek ye earnestly the best gifts, always remembering for what they are given;

9 For verily I say unto you, they are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments, and him that seeketh so to do; that all may be benefited that seek or that ask of me, that ask and not for a sign that they may consume it upon their lusts.

10 And again, verily I say unto you, I would that ye should always remember, and always retain in your minds what those gifts are, that are given unto the church.

26 And all these gifts come from God, for the benefit of the children of God.

Elder Henry B. Eyring: We do not know the hearts of those who offend us. Nor do we know all the sources of our own anger and hurt. The Apostle Paul was telling us how to love in a world of imperfect people, including ourselves when he said:

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

The Corinthians were Romans living in Corinth.

1 Corinthians may not have been the first letter from Paul to the Corinthians. There are others not in the Bible. 1 Corinthians may have been written before Acts.

To get out of temptation sometimes we have to leave behind some things we value. The spirit will guide us to not be overcome, but we must heed those printings. Joseph, Israel's son, had to leave his cloak behind when tempted by Potiphar's wife.

It was suggested that all of our personality traits are gifts of the spirit. We are responsible to develop all of our gifts and seek the power of the spirit to increase them. We are also to not use our gifts for evil. We should not use our sense of humor or talent for finance or whatever for bad things. Our gifts should be used for the benefit of others.

If you don't have the spirit, then the things of God seem ridiculous. A 14 year old boy seeing God and Jesus and then being given gold plates seems unbelievable if you don't have the spirit. Just like chocolate without sugar is bitter
