In the next life some good people may choose the terrestrial kingdom, because their beliefs make the celestial kingdom offensive. They may find that Jesus is all they want and not want God the father, so they take the terrestrial kingdom. They are looking for streets of gold and even the terrestrial kingdom is exponentially more glorious than mortal life and indescribable.

Primary Program

Matthew 7:7

7 ¶ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

John 13:34

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

John 8:31

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

Article of Faith 6

6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.

Matthew 28:19

19 ¶ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

John 5:39

39 ¶ Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

John 12:26

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

Article of Faith 3

3 We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.

Job 19:25

25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

Elders Quorum

The lesson was based on Elder Henry B Eyring’s October 2019 General Conference talk, “Holiness and the Plan of Happiness”

“According to the Old Testament, things or places were holy that were set apart for a sacred purpose; the opposite of holy is therefore common or profane.” (“Holiness”, Bible Dictionary)

The world has cheapened the word holy to be an exclamation or derogatory term.

When you feel the Holy Ghost is a moment of holiness.

Doctrine and Covenants 78:19

19 And he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea, more.

A sister that recently returned from the Florida Tampa Mission spoke to us.

You can learn and understand more if you use the Book of Mormon and Bible together.

To receive revelation, be specific in your prayers and be ready and willing to act on what is revealed.

God orchestrates complicated events to come together for our good.  He is able to do that for every individual on Earth.  He does this with everyone’s agency in the mix and He still is able to make it happen, because He knows each of us so personally.  He knows everyone.

Sunday School

Hebrews 7:13

13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

The reason Hebrews feels different than others of Paul's epistles may be because Luke may have been the scribe and Luke writes very differently than the other scribes.

Hebrews 11:1

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:13

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Alma 32

17 Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe.

18 Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it.

19 And now, how much more cursed is he that knoweth the will of God and doeth it not, than he that only believeth, or only hath cause to believe, and falleth into transgression?

20 Now of this thing ye must judge. Behold, I say unto you, that it is on the one hand even as it is on the other; and it shall be unto every man according to his work.

21 And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

Hebrews 10:34-38

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

“Sure it is tough—before you join the Church, while you are trying to join, and after you have joined.”

...

“Don’t panic and retreat. Don’t lose your confidence. Don’t forget how you once felt. Don’t distrust the experience you had. That tenacity is what saved Moses when the adversary confronted him, and it is what will save you.” (Jeffrey R Holland, “‘Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence’”, BYU Speech March 2, 1999)

The Stake President

Moses 7

18 And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them.

3 Nephi 11

29 For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another.

"One way I have seen it done is to search for anything on which we agree. To be that peacemaker, you need to have the simple faith that as children of God, with all our differences, it is likely that in a strong position we take, there will be elements of truth. The great peacemaker, the restorer of unity, is the one who finds a way to help people see the truth they share. That truth they share is always greater and more important to them than their differences. You can help yourself and others to see that common ground if you ask for help from God and then act. He will answer your prayer to help restore peace, as He has mine." (President Henry B. Eyring, “Our Hearts Knit as One”, October 2008 General Conference)

Being right is different than winning.

“Sometimes we rationalize; we wonder if we are feeling a spiritual impression or if it is just our own thoughts. When we begin to second-guess, even third-guess, our feelings—and we all have—we are dismissing the Spirit; we are questioning divine counsel. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that if you will listen to the first promptings, you will get it right nine times out of ten.” (Elder Ronald A. Rasband, “Let the Holy Spirit Guide”, April 2017 General Conference)

1 Corinthians 12:7

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

The Holy Ghost gives us confidence when we are not confident. Through the holy ghost we can do amazing things.

Elder Terence M Vinson

We are taught the philosophies of men in things all around us and it can be easy to get confused.

The first and second great commandments.

Matthew 22

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The second great commandment is kind of a barometer to check if we are living the first.

Luke 10 - The good Samaritan.

What shall I do to obtain eternal life?

Who is my neighbor?

We can't force someone's will.

We fill all the roles in the good Samaritan story.

Testimonies

Sunday School

1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon

1 Timothy 4:12

12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

2 Timothy 3:14-17

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Alma 17:2

2 Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.

"I am grateful for emphasis on reading the scriptures. I hope that for you this will become something far more enjoyable than a duty; that, rather, it will become a love affair with the word of God. I promise you that as you read, your minds will be enlightened and your spirits will be lifted. At first it may seem tedious, but that will change into a wondrous experience with thoughts and words of things divine." (President Gordon B. Hinckley, “The Light within You”, April 1995 General Conference)

"You have the Savior of the World on your side. How can you fail?" - Elder Gary E Stevens

First Speaker

The atonement is not just about repentance.

“Whether you are diligently moving along the covenant path, have slipped or stepped from the covenant path, or can’t even see the path from where you are now, I plead with you to repent. Experience the strengthening power of daily repentance—of doing and being a little better each day.” (President Russell M. Nelson, “We Can Do Better and Be Better”, April 2019 General Conference)

Next Speaker

Just like certain apps drain power more quickly, so do choices in life drain us at different rates.  Some choices charge you.

Moroni 10:5

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

“My encouragement is to help you know that when you do your part, the Lord adds His power to your efforts.” (President Henry B. Eyring, “You Are Not Alone in the Work”, October 2015 General Conference)

“If you hesitate in this adventure because you doubt your ability, remember that discipleship is not about doing things perfectly; it’s about doing things intentionally. It is your choices that show what you truly are, far more than your abilities.” (Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Your Great Adventure”, October 2019 General Conference)

Mosiah 5:2

2 And they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.

Are we as intent at caring for our testimonies as are at caring for our phone?

“Search out the truth of the written word; listen for and receive the truth declared by living prophets and teachers; enrich your minds with the best of knowledge and facts. Of those who speak in his name, the Lord requires humility, not ignorance. Intelligence is the glory of God; and no man can be saved in ignorance [see D&C 93:36; 131:6].” (Joseph F Smith, Gospel Doctrine, 206.)

Are we intentionally seeking out times to read our scriptures?

Alma 32:27

27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

“If we seek true happiness, we must expend our energies for purposes larger than our own self-interests. Let us ponder prayerfully how we may effectively and lovingly give service to our families, neighbors, and fellow Saints. And let us know that when we learn to do this we have learned one of the great truths of eternity.” (Spencer W. Kimball, “Seek Learning, Even by Study and Also by Faith,” Ensign, Sep 1983, p. 3)

Are we making people our priority?

“Often, the answer to our prayer does not come while we’re on our knees but while we’re on our feet serving the Lord and serving those around us. Selfless acts of service and consecration refine our spirits, remove the scales from our spiritual eyes, and open the windows of heaven. By becoming the answer to someone’s prayer, we often find the answer to our own.” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Waiting on the Road to Damascus”, April 2011 General Conference)

James 4:7

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

If not Christ, then who do we follow?

There are things in the doctrine that I know and things that I believe and I hope in the rest.

“Third, strive to walk the path of discipleship. As your love for God and His children deepens, so does your commitment to follow Jesus Christ. …

“The important thing is that you don’t give up; you keep trying to get it right. You will eventually become better, happier, and more authentic. Talking with others about your faith will become normal and natural. …

“Fourth, share what is in your heart. … Always look for opportunities to bring up your faith in natural and normal ways with people—both in person as well as online.” (Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Missionary Work: Sharing What Is in Your Heart (excerpts)”, New Era May 2019)

Philippians 4:7

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 2:1-5

1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

"There are hundreds of people in these valleys, who never owned a cow in the world, until they came here, but now they have got a few cows and sheep around them, a yoke of oxen, and a horse to ride upon, they feel to be personages of far greater importance than Jesus Christ was, when he rode into Jerusalem upon an ass's colt. They become puffed up in pride, and selfishness, and their minds become attached to the things of this world. They become covetous, which makes them idolaters. Their substance engrosses so much of their attention, they forget their prayers, and forget to attend the assemblies of the Saints, for they must see to their land, or to their crops that are suffering, until by and by the grasshoppers come like a cloud, and cut away the bread from their mouth introducing famine and distress, to stir them up in remembrance of the Lord their God." (A Discourse by President Brigham Young, Delivered at the Special Conference, in the Tabernacle, Great Salt Lake City, August 14, 1853.Reported by G. D. Watt.)

Article of Faith 13

“We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.”

Philippians 4:8

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

“The word seek means to go in search of, try to discover, try to acquire. It requires an active, assertive approach to life. For example, Abraham “sought for the blessings of the fathers … and to be a greater follower of righteousness.” (Abr. 1:2.) It is the opposite of passively waiting for something good to come to us, with no effort on our part.

“We can fill our lives with good, leaving no room for anything else. We have so much good from which to choose that we need never partake of evil. Elder Richard L. Evans declared: ‘There is evil in the world. There is also good. It is for us to learn and choose between the two; to increase in self-discipline, in competence, in kindness; to keep going—putting one foot in front of the other—one day, one hour, one moment, one task at a time.’ (Richard L. Evans, Thoughts for One Hundred Days, 5 vols., Salt Lake City: Publishers Press, 1970, 4:199.)

“If we seek things that are virtuous and lovely, we surely will find them. Conversely, if we seek for evil, we will find that also. Lucifer understands how to tempt and drag many of our Heavenly Father’s children down to where he and his followers are. He rebelled and was cast out; he wants to make us as miserable as he is. (See 2 Ne. 2:18.)” (Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, “Seeking the Good”, April 1992 General Conference)

Moroni 7

12 Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually.

Colossians 1:23

23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Colossians 2:6-8

6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Helaman 5:12

12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

“We live in a time when many worry about their livelihood. They are concerned about the future and doubt their ability to resolve the challenges that confront them. Many have experienced personal misfortune and sadness. They hunger for meaning and purpose in life.

“Because there is such great interest in these issues, the world is not bashful in offering numerous new answers to every problem we face. People run from one new idea to the next, hoping to find something that will answer the burning questions of their souls. They attend seminars and buy books, CDs, and other products. They get caught up in the excitement of looking for something new. But inevitably, the flame of each new theory fades, only to be replaced by another “new and improved” solution that promises to do what the others before could not.” (President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “The Way of the Disciple”, April 2009 General Conference)

Alma 53

20 And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.

Alma 56

55 And now it came to pass that when they had surrendered themselves up unto us, behold, I numbered those young men who had fought with me, fearing lest there were many of them slain.

56 But behold, to my great joy, there had not one soul of them fallen to the earth; yea, and they had fought as if with the strength of God; yea, never were men known to have fought with such miraculous strength; and with such mighty power did they fall upon the Lamanites, that they did frighten them; and for this cause did the Lamanites deliver themselves up as prisoners of war.

If you want to have success, you have to open your mouth.

2 Nephi 32

9 But behold, I say unto you that ye must pray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul.

The Book of Mormon teaches us to pray.  Satan teaches us to not pray.  To find excuses not to pray or to feel that prayer is useless.

Next Speaker

God is involved in the little details of our lives.

1 Nephi 1:20

20 And when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even as with the prophets of old, whom they had cast out, and stoned, and slain; and they also sought his life, that they might take it away. But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.

DnC 46

15 And again, to some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know the differences of administration, as it will be pleasing unto the same Lord, according as the Lord will, suiting his mercies according to the conditions of the children of men.

Mercy is compassionate behavior beyond what someone deserves.

Elders Quorum

Often there are mysteries of God that come forth either from a leader or to us personally, but we don't have enough information to connect it to the information we already have.

These changes in the Church are to adapt to the times we live in. There have been changes for men, women, and youth to strengthen each group. Each group needs to step up.
